Hey guys,

I am a new member. I have kept freshwater fish for years. I set up a 29g saltwater tank 4 weeks ago that has two Clarkii clowns, a Foxface, and a blue tang.

Before anyone attacks me, I know that foxfaces and blue tangs become big fish that need a lot of room. However, my foxface is a juvenile (2-3 inches) and my blue tang is tiny (1 inch?).

My question is how long, for those of you have raised those fish, will it take before I need to get a bigger tank for them. I was told at the place I purchased them (an Atlanta Reef sponsor, Nemo) they grow slowly, so it may be a few years. Your thoughts?

Also, I have two Mexican Turbo Snails and 2 blue foot crabs. How many other cleaners do I need?

All of my water parameters are perfect. I have a lot of pink, red, and green coralline algae forming even though my tank has not been running that long.

Feel free to deluge me with info, I love to learn.

Thanks,

rags

This fish will become stressed, I swear by regardless of the size of tang not to put them in anything shorter than 4Ft long min and they really need 6ft if you go by the book, they become stressed because most tangs swim 2-3miles a day in the wild, just giving u warning before People Ravish your post not really but it is some good advise to upsize tank or trade off, not being mean or nothing at all just giving my 2 cents in as u can see i don't really have any rep so take it as u will.

Chris

I had a feeling it would be too good to be true to keep them. Then, where should I trade them into? Will PetCo accept a trade in? I got the fish from Nemo.

I have never traded/sold fish before. Where would we meet? The tang...I guess 25. Can I keep the foxface rabbitfish in my tank safely?

well i would say no. they are kinda like tangs. if ur foxface gets too stressed out in the tank and u cant find someone to take it or if u are upgradeing and need a place to store them my tank has a ton of room. it is a 55g and it wont be too small for them for at least 4 months.

Do U Go To Meetings For 25 I Will Take Him.i Could Meet You In The Marietta Area Which Would Be Half Way For Both Of Us

dont trade the fish in also u would just loose money. like i said before if u need a place to house the fish my tank has room. and i think i could even house the rabbit for a year.by then i think u would have an upgrade.

Hey saltwater, would you take the foxface too if I threw him in for 20? I bought him and the tang today from Nemo, they are in perfect condition. Where are the meetings? Maybe I could meet you at a meeting and give them to you there?

hey ill buy the foxface from u. i have been wanting to buy one for a while. ill pm u.

The Meeting Is At Tony'S On Holcomb Bridge Rd.no Sighn Of Ick On The Tang Right.THIS ON WILL BE A BLAST LOTS OF FRAGS AND EQUIPMENT FOR SALE.

I had a blue tang and two clownfish in a 29 gallon tank for over two years. They are now in my 180 gallon tank and all three are over 12 years old. Now, both a little blue tang and a foxface in a 29.... hmmm - probably not.

Take the fish back to Nemo and ask for your money back. There is NO REASON they should have sold you THOSE two fish KNOWING you had a 29 gal tank... I am sorry, it just reall gets to me when a LFS does this and disregaurds the life of the animal and the investment of the fish keeper!

Just so you know, you might be able to keep two or three more SMALL fish (that will always be small) in that 29 with those two clowns.

Aaron at Nemo is a really good guy....I am surprised he told you that those two fish would be ok in there because he always has really good advice....I would really suggest going back to the store and seeing if he wont let you take them back and give you your full credit especially if it's just been a day......i mean you probably wont get your money back but you should get your credit....I have no idea waht his store policy is but I know he is a really good guy that does care for the animals life....plenty of times he has told me no when I wanted to get something for my 30 gallon. Are you sure he understood that you had a 29?

Both of those fish are going to get pretty large. If you are planning on upgrading very soon, hang on to them and just make sure you keep the water pristine.

If you can't upgrade quite yet, get some smaller fish instead. If done correctly, you can house quite a few fish in a 29 (I had one in college). My 29 was heavily stocked and I was not plagued with ich or casualties.

To maximize the fish count, make sure you have very good filtration (skimmer, etc.) and the water is kept very clean. Then, add fish depending on where they like to be on the water column. Some like to be on the sandbed only, while others will like to be on the sides and so on. This will only allow you to keep more fish though, not larger ones.

Not surprised at Nemo's actions though. I have experienced quite a bit there.

hey if u do an upgrade within the next year as i said i can house them. they will get a nice tank. i just got my protein skimmer on monday so i am able to keep more fish so i can house them for u. just an offer.
