Fragged some zoa's for the first time

Had various zoa's hanging by threads essentially so I severed them and glued them to a fag plug. Most appeared to be in bad shape from the flow battering them around but I'm hopeful they'll make it!

Also, all the frags from the frag swap are looking better. The green acan's are inflating a little, the SPS are all showing hints of color and polyp extension, and a mystery frag is showing a little color as well. Think the mystery frag might be another kind of acan but with such a small size it's hard to tell.

Finally, I got a fair sized rock with zoa's that appear to be in bad shape. This is the one that sat in a zip-loc bag forever. Some of the zoa's seem to be shedding their outer layer of skin, others have dark gunk at their mouths(poop?), and the rest are doing fine. Is shedding a sign of recovery or death?

Thanks!

Bad as in spreading or bad for the individual polyp?

What interesting is my blenny is "cleaning" the zoas. He's taking off the loose flesh and the dark gunk but leaving the zoas intact.

My experience with leathers is that when they shed their outer layer, they come back looking really good. Hopefully, the zoas will do the same thing. I would guess that the dark gunk is a sign that those individuals are in bad shape, but don't give up on the others. Just going to require some big time water changes.

Don't zoas just close up when they are in bad shape? The fact that they are open is a good sign...don't you think.

Zoanthids are extremely hardy and will at times open up after months of being closed. Honestly, unless you damaged the mouth or top side of the polyps, or accidently got epoxy/super glue onto the part that opens up, you should be fine.

I wouldn't stress about the poop either, as far as I know, Zoas, like many other corals have a "manus," that is a mouth and anus. They were probably extruding something they wanted out. From my experience that is no clear indication they are on their way out.

They are just sliming up ... plays do this more than zoos tend too IME. also the stuff coming out of the mouth is zooalgae. It normally happens if there is a drastic change in lighting.

Give them time. zoos are pretty tough customers
