The heater in my Solana malfunctioned and my water got up to 94!!!! Luckily i really didn't have too much stuff in there and lost a minimal amount for this reminder. For all of those that do not have a controller on your tank... go get one yesterday! One of the biggest safeguards in this hobby is redundancy, if i had a controller on this tank it would have been programmed to shutoff the heater regardless of what the heater wanted to do! I have an apex on my 125 and will be investing in an apex jr for my solana before I put anything serious in there again.

+1. i would just add it will fail at the worst possible moment while your hands are full dealing with the other equipment that failed

I have spares of almost everything, including an optima battery for my vortechs :-)

+1 - I learned the hard way when my solana tanks skyrocketed and i lost everything. Controllers are great to have.

Ranco temp controllers are super reliable as well if an aquarium controller is not in your budget.

I dont know, I never met the guy! Just saying, your heater will malfunction, your pump will need a new impeller, you will need to change the bearings of your vortech pumps, your korialia impeller will start spinning the wrong way, dosing pumps need to be maintained to dose the correct levels for a long time, too many things to go wrong with float valves. When running our equipment we must be aware that it will not work forever and we must think ahead so we do not lose livestock when the equipment fails.

didnt kill ALL of my sps in that tank, just all of my ORA sps in that tank! :mad2:

Feel your pain truly....happened in my frag tank once. Lost about $500 worth of SPS corals due to a heater going berserk. Learned my lesson well.

In one week; my AC3 quit working, a heater malfunctioned, Tunze 6055 motor block died and figured out that an Eshoppes frag shelf doesn't work on 3/4" glass. ARE YOU KIDDING ME!

Somewhere along the line, I felt this was only my luck. Glad to see someone else share in my type of luck. Seriously though, sorry for your loss.

That tank has just had a rough start to 2012. My central heating broke when it got real cold in january and browned out everything, i assume this killed off a lot of bacteria and whatnot causing a cyano outbreak (luckily now) so I moved most of my livestock into my 125. If i wouldnt have done that I would have moved into the $1000+ of livestock loss instead of hundereds. I have been wanting to redo that tank anyways, so i guess timing kinda worked its way out by itself. I was angry about the losses yesterday, this morning i have been rocking back and forth in a little ball in the corner of the room for long enough, so ill be over it now and try to see some silver lining. moving forward I think I am going to empty the tank, bleach the rock, reaquascape to a bonsai frag tank and get an apex jr or a RKL and call it a day.
