So guys im going to the beach and remember my tank was just set up so nothing in it except LR and LS what can i look for down there that i can actually put into my tank I know ur not supposed to do this but since i have nothing in my tank yet i figured i could look for starfish or something down there?

Ummm my advice is do not put anything from the beach in your tank... 1) it is illegal 2) unless you know what is safe, you risk putting something you do not want in there, 3) it harms the environment, 4) good luck keeping it alive while bringing it home 5) your tank is a tropical reef, flordia is not!

You could put together a FL Gulf shores tank, but I can tell you from experience that gathering stuff from the shore leads to nasty stuff in the tank and high rates of die off. There's just too much crap on the shorelines in the high traffic areas that breeds too many things in the water that will bloom nicely when you confine the volume to a small area.

However, if you do want to collect, you need a FL fishing permit for out of state residents and there is a laundry list of things you can't collect and strict limits. Fines for not having the license and/or collecting the wrong things are very stiff. FL takes its wildlife very seriously.

it is not entirely illegal, and collecting from the shore, granted you do it right, can be much less ecologically damaging than buying wild caught corals, fish, etc. there are far worse things than someone bringing home some livestock from the beach, just dont bring home coral thats attached to rock, or any endangered species. do all your research first as far as laws goes, florida does not f uck around with their ecosystems, even though personally i think they are already kind of screwed.

It is if you don't have an out of state fishing permit/license. Can't take a thing that's alive and I'm not sure you're allowed to remove stuff like rock and sand at all without a commercial permit.

Water is legal without a permit, though. I knew guys in Tampa that collected their water for their tanks a few 100 yards off shore.

For my part, I wish every state was like FL for animal laws in general. There are far, far too many jackasses mistreating their animals and doing things in this state that would have them up on felony charges in FL. And as far as the general ecosystem goes, you'll never see nasty businesses like http://www.vulcanmaterials.com/vc.asp">Vulcan Chemicals</a> or carpet plants in FL because of those laws.

Problem is, agriculture mucks with the coastal stuff. That they have a TON of in FL. Second biggest beef producer, I think.

florida state fishing permits are must i agree, they are around like 7.50 for three days i think.

Here's some stuff I posted to Talking Reef for someone who was going to FL:

xyz are you serious "its harmful to the environment." Of course its harmful - so what makes it morally right to do it if you have a "license." Whats the difference?? Its still leaving the ocean. Hundreds of companies rape and pillage reefs and oceans to make a profit from you and I. Just doesnt make much since. My opinion is, if you go snorkeling and find some snails, LR, starfish and maybe some other stuff go for it! If you dont other people will and do! Of course i would not rip corals from rocks or anything like that. Just dont get caught. Those rules are in place for mainly people making a living off that stuff. Not someone who gets a couple snails and a couple pounds of LR. I am sure people will flame what i say. But remeber you are in this hobby so it would be a double standard to say I am wrong.

i agree with chrisjet to an extent, but at the same time, just because others do wrong, does not make it okay for us to do so. The best thing we can do is support aquaculture and aquaculture based companies. Freshwater is over 90% aquacultured, if given enough funding through our sales and consumption, saltwater may be near that rate as well.

thanks nishant good point. Think of it like this - By buying LR and CUC's or really any livestock how many of us ask "well how did you get it" - no we ask Most of us could care HOW MUCH.less where its from as long as the price is right. By buying livestock were supporting people taking from the seas for our enjoyment and I am ok with that, apparently all of us are whether you will admit it or not . So like I said what is the difference if we pay for it or take it ourselves, it is still leaving the ocean. The best thing we can do is support aquaculture and aquaculture based companies, like nishant says. However, ill admit - when i buy something i buy it depending on the price.

Well, you didn't mention the size of your tank, but if it happens to be Jacuzzi-size you might see something like this on the beach.......

Yes I am very serious, thank you... The moral aspect to most things in life is a big deal to me and without getting on my soap box, I am going to say it is not a double standard. There are state and federal laws about collection for a reason, it is for some minor control and preservation. I think the laws on collection should be stricter. I am an avid diver and spear fisherman. I know all too well about taking stuff from the sea. I have the permits and follow the rules about doing so. That few lbs of LR you take might not be a big deal to you but IF everyone did it, even if they are not a commercial harvester, then it is a big deal. I am all for you saving money, but also know what damage you are doing to the environment and how little you know about proper collecction and impact limiting collection. Not all things pretty should be taken from the sea, take the impact to the reefs of collecting cleaner wrasses as an example. Maybe the difference in our views come from the fact as I view my tank as a living ecosystem from the ocean and there for the education and preservation of said ecosystem. Sounds like your tank is just something that looks "perdy" and thus you can collect anything that looks perdy to you no matter how it was collected or how it survived in captivity. Believe me, I turn my back all the time on things that look nice because I know it will not survive and/or I do not support the manner in which it is collected and do not want to encourage its collection any further. So yes, I am very serious about the issue.

If you find one of these look real hard for another one for me... You can have any frag from my tank...wait.. you can just have my tank as a fair trade.

Believe me dude trading your tank for that would be a good trade... Not because she is worth that much or that rare but because she would have made you get rid of your tank anyways once she got setteled in and controlling enough!!! ;)

I find that generally speaking if they pass environmental protection laws on something, it really needs it. Getting these laws passed are difficult and take to long in most cases. By the time they get in place, it is often too late. There are some successes, but the vast majority of protection that extends to these sorts of things don't end well. Not that I am a big environmentalist, but I see no good coming from destroying an environment for so many creatures.
