I have a 29g Biocube that has viral so I was trying to get a recommendation from others for a reef safe colorful fish that would be good for that size aquarium. Recently traded in a flame angel and valentini puffer as they were nipping at LPS.

Or a yellow assessor. I’ve wanted one for a while but they seem a little pricey. I may try to find one for my 20g now

Grammas are one of my favorite; but it sounds to me like you’re describing a fairy wrasse.

There are hundreds of different species, but generally they are all very colorful, reef safe, active swimmers, and don’t get too big. That said, do your research as always... 29g is pretty small and most fish will outgrow it.

I am happy with my choice. My acans are now coming out since not under routine attack from flame angel.

Not sure that Anthias is the best choice here. They require more care and feedings, which would contribute to algae growth. And nutrient control is already a challenging issue for Nano tanks. You would also want to ensure proper oxygen exchange (have a nano skimmer or bubbler) because Anthias are such active fish and will need the extra oxygen.

Plus, you can’t really put a school of them in a 29g.

That said, 1-2 of one of the smaller species of Anthias could be an option worth considering if a person is motivated and willing to take on the extra responsibility.

The first fish I thought of was a royal gramma. I love those guys! However, if you're planning on doing a lot of corals, a 6 line would be a better option since they really do a good job at controlling pests. I keep a wrasse of some sort in every tank I have so they can help out with reef pests. I do my best to QT frags and avoid any pests but I've spent too much time over the years trying to catch peaceful fish so that I could add a 6 line to aid with an issue. In particular, I'm thinking of flatworms. If you like corals, you'll get some sort of flatworm and a 6 line is a great asset when something like that happens.
