I wash my hands with hand soap before put them into the tank and I rinse them off really well but do you hand soaps contain phosphates nitrates?

Everything I have ready says just use water. If you feel you must use soap, use Dawn Dish Soap. The hand soaps have lots of anti bacteria stuff and perfumes that get left on your hands.

Rinsing with water is just fine.

If you do use soap, look for soaps with the LEAST amount of chemicals you can find. I wouldn't worry so much about the phates/trates (which are unlikely), but the residual chemicals that can hang on your skin could cause potential problems (another plug for using gloves!).

When you buy soap with the intention of washing before putting your hands in the tank find something preferably with no colors or fragrances. Shameless plug for sure, but see my sig. I'm a soap czar in my off-time and would recommend our non-scents line.

Unless its a really small tank or REALLY a LOT OF SOAP I wouldn't worry about it. That being said, prevention counts for a lot sometimes

Heath, if you are worried about having any residue on your hands try scrubbing them with table salt to wash it off. It works for me.

Thought I would add that you can go to REI and buy environmentally safe hand soap. Its for washing your hands in a stream or dumping out water in the woods etc. I wouldnt pour it in your tank but I would think this would be ideal. Its biodegradable, phosphate free and pH neutral.

id rather put bacteria from my hand in my tank than a bunch of chemicals from soap in my tank. i just use hot water then wipe my arms down really well with a towel
