Ok if I've seen it once I've seen it a dozen times. "There is no such thing as 0 po4". Well in that lies the problem. I ordered this thing 2-3 months ago and I continually get 0 readings. I test every Friday and have only gotten 2 test that had a numerical value other than zero. The thing is pretty stupid proof but I'm beginning to wonder. My last test was .02 now tonight.....0.

Remember that there can be a 0.03 variance, so "0" could be 0.03 and .02 could be 0.05. I always add the 0.03 to my reading for safety sake.
How are your corals? Good PE? Algea? What is your Nitrate reading?

Great point! Why didn't I think of that? The tap should have high po4. I'll do that tomorrow and post up

Edit: Nitrate is at 4ppm using redsea pro. I'm in week 3 of vod dosing so I'm currently at 1.8 ml. Polyp extension isn't that great compared to some of the pics I see on here. Corals are doing fine and growing but not as fast as I would like. Did not think of the variance. Thanx man

therein lies the problem, albeit I think the variance is more.

I, unfortuantely bought a green egg, and while my DD Merck & Low Range Elos Phosphate kit measured 0.024, this thing said 0. and 0 again.

:boo:

I hear the Eggs are hugely inconsistent from one unit to the next. The bench top is the only way to go. The low range version. I've tested mine against two others before and all gave the exact same readings using the same water sample and reagent batch as a control. I look for consistency. Even if something is consistently wrong, you have an accurate baseline to work off of. (And I don't think mine is wrong fwiw.)

Ralph I actually took your advise a while back and bought the elos po4 tester. I don't think I got the low range kit and got aggravated at the inability to distinguish between the very subtle shade differences. That was the only reason for the egg. I thought it was very accurate based on reviews.

What was the damage on the bench top?

I love my Hanna checkers. Very consistent and seem to be accurate when verified against other test methods. I was reading 0 on my phosphates for a few months and then it started creeping up.

This weekend I checked the tap water. The readings came out to .26. Turned around and tested my tank TWICE! 0 reading. Maybe I just have a clean tank

Let me know the next meeting you come to and I will bring my bench top version and see how their results compare if you like.

Ill do that brother. They don't even test for it here at LFS. Thanks

Edit: For what ever its worth I do not believe it to be zero. +/- .04

This was what got me to buy the green egg... Just got it today... tested at 0.06.. expected to be high.. I will test again in a week to see impact of new GFO.

Very good article. Thank you it made me feel a lot better about my purchase. It seems as though it is very accurate thru the low ranges. Not a bad device for the money that's for sure. I need a relatively accurate range to work with which is what it gives. I think a lot of us in this hobby get to caught up in the "down to the last micron" world, myself included.

I asked Hanna about this and they told me that the test will not work with fresh water. I was reading 0 for quite a while on my tank too.

Hanna Checker reviews in this post are not reassuring. Some months ago, maybe 6-8 months ago; numerous persons posted how wonderfully these little units, hanna checkers were so great.

When will somebody come to the defense of the posts I've read months back here at ARC how wonderful these testers [hanna] were?

I was convinced that I had to have these testers. Now, I read this thread.
