I'd like to know how someone determines when a fish in their aquarium is happy or not . Also what makes their fish happy or not .

I have a wrasse that flashes everytime she sees me. I think that's "her" way of flirting with me........ She's super happy, unless I go a few days without feeding her, then she's not

Could be laughter:D

Mine write me thank you notes and send gifts.

Edit: On another note, I doubt fish feel emotion like happiness or sadness. Their brain is very simple and does not have the capabilities to "feel" those emotions

They should be happy. Not many predators. And their house is bigger than mine (living space to personal size ratio). Spoiled little brats

Dylan,

You're describing many people I personally know! In any case, I would have to disagree based on my observation. I have seen fishes searching for their mate when one jumps into the overflow and also have heard first hand how a fish stopped eating as much when their mate passed away. Those types of behavior to me are indicative of creatures who possess some level of emotions. Of course, I've never seen a fish shed tears.

If that is the case, then all my fishes are shedding tears since I see numerous bubbles floating upwards. Oh, I know why. I'm an hour late feeding them.

Fight flight feed and Reproduce...

Those are the basic instincts that creatures with a small limbic system and cerebreum.

"happiness" in a fish would be based upon feeding and breeding. Take away one of the those and then they would feel "sad". Other than that, they don't exhibit the complex emotions that we feel. When I look at my tank, I feel "happy". That "happiness" is a complex emotion non associated with feeding or breeding.

Do they feel happiness? Sure. I guess it is up to your interpretation of happiness!

Hang on! I just received a daily status email from them regarding their emotional status. Good news. They're happy but their last meal was a little too salty (from Metro).

Fish happiness can be rated by 3 things.

1. Fatness
2. Non fightiness(usually due to abundance of food)
3. Not running up and down the glass(usually due to non fightiness)

So basically the key to fish happiness is an auto feeder.

Trouble maker. :-). LOL

Ok I will bite. All of my fish are happy because I say they are happy. My dog is happy because I say he is happy. My wife's cat is happy because he knows he bugs the **** out of me. :-)

Can they feel emotion? That isn't the point. What emotion do they make us feel and more importantly what "Compassion" do they make us feel.

Ripped tide the "fish whisperer" I see a reality show in your future:yay:

I know my fish are happy when they eat much, understand hierarchy, are very fat, and sleep in sand and get up everyday. My false percs that I've had for 7 years are happy when they beat down anyone (mandarin, wrasse, human) that invades 12X4 inch home.
