It is hard to tell because the pic is only of the specimen, nothing in the background to compare to. Ask for another, if it is legit they should have no problem providing another picture. My .02.

yes, i did ask for another. i asked for maybe a further shot. they said their pics were not altered, but they only had those two pics. hmmmmm...

if it's on Ebay...

they've painted it in the BEST POSSIBLE PICTURE...

I guarantee that image has been modified in some way..

This ebay Seller is popular with R2R Vendors. Some of them buy his chalices and then sell them for a lot of money per eye. One Seller bought this off GoldenBasket for $1400 and turned around and sold 1/2 the colony for $3000.

Thread in which he resells half the colony:

Another one is doing the same thing here. Gotta love the free enterprise system.

I bought a small acro colony off GoldenBasket a couple months ago, and it is nice, but not as intense as what the auction pic shows. I just assume most/all pics from serious Vendors are actinic and the saturation has been played with.

Edit: Forgot to add: the Seller that sold 1/2 the colony for $3000 shipped the chalice and some other stuff to the buyer and it got lost or held up in the FedEx system and the entire shipment was a total loss. Karma maybe?

thanks for the help. I was tempted but you helped me get over it.

I'll never tell anyone not to spend their money. Lord knows I've spent large amounts of $ on corals before. But the 'nem is up to $257 + shipping now with over two days to go, so I'm sure it'll be well into 3 bills or more by the time it is over, and I just can't see paying that for a mini-maxi 'nem, personally.

The name is kinda strange as well. Seller probably is calling it an "adhesive anemone" to avoid calling it a mini carpet anemone, since the price of these rarely tops $60-$80 for the nicest ones. Looks nice, but is it $350+ nice?

That's correct.:)

Edit: Someone may also be buying it with the idea of propagating it. In that case, it might not be a bad investment if you can sell the clones for a good price over time.

the picture has been color corrected but not brightened... more like making the color true to the eye

Jeez, this one hasn't be played with, huh? Look at the "black" substrate.

I would say the second one hasn't been played with either, more like the photographer isn't very good. If the photo had been touched up, they would have probably have just touched up the coral itself, not the entire photo.. not to mention, it's very easy to send the sand "back to black"

My guess would be the colors of the light and the coral itself are messing with the camera and this guy doesn't know which settings to alter to fix it.. either that or "vidal" is terrible with Photoshop.

At the same time.. it could be completely photoshopped and look nothing like that..

These were 2 minute jobs, the third one I color corrected the sand.

Either way, I don't believe for a minute that these are accidents (not your intentional shopped versions above). I believe whatever they have done is to enhance the wild colors and make people want to buy them. These Vendors are not beginners. They take tons of pictures or have those that take them for them.

is it possible that they may look this good under actnics? if so, that wouldn't be so bad.

Ya I could see that being the case. kind of a cheap move but in the coral world I suppose that happens

What would be nice would be to give a pic that is a realistic representation of what the thing would look like under a regular Halide or T5 setup. Nothing wrong with actinic pics, but say it is actinic, etc.

I've seen a couple do that. The best pics regarding realism, IMO, are from those regular reefers just fragging corals and selling the excess, like on the ARC or RC FS Forums.

Many Vendors cover their rears by having disclaimers on their websites that state the coral may look different under your unique set of tank parameters and lighting, or something to that effect.
