Hello everyone! My name is Tony and I am just starting to get into this hobby. I find it very addicting, especially going to different fish stores and seeing new stuff I want to get. I am working on stocking a 55G FOWLR tank at the moment. I also have two 150G tanks, one of them is saltwater and the other one is a freshwater community tank. I'm hoping to get some knowledge and tips from this forum and also looking forward to getting to know other fish enthusiasts in my area. :)

Welcome to the ARC! You have come to the right place there is a lot of nice knowledgeable people here that will answer all your questions. So research a little bit and then ask away.
 
Welcome Tony!!! Is it just me or did anyone else think the first couple of lines sounded like someone at a 12 step program. :-). "Hi, my name is Rich and I am a reefaholic". :-)

The guy in the plumbing section of the local hardware store runs away when he sees you because he knows that it's time for you to do a water change and you're there to make a gadget to make it a "little" easier.

Thanks for the welcome guys! Yes, I'm Tony and I am a fishaholic. I don't think I have reached reefaholic status yet, lol. But I think I'm getting there soon. I started as a fish only with live rock and now everytime I go to the LFS, I'm staring at all the cool corals and want to start a reef tank. I already did some research and I would need to get good lights, skimmer, chemicals, sump, refugium, and etc. This is an expensive hobby!!! I heard mushrooms and star polyps are good starter coral, so I may just drop a couple in my FOWLR tank to see what they do, while planning out what kind of reef setup I want to do.

The first thing on my to do list is to buy a 55G tank for all my rocks. I have a bunch of rocks that I need to reseed. I was also thinking about buying a 55G tank to prepare fresh aged saltwater for water changes. So I need 2 tanks, one for reseeding rock and one for making aged saltwater. I heard keeping water in plastic containers is not good. Is keeping fresh aged saltwater always on hand a good idea? Anybody have a better method for water changes and reseeding live rock?
 
Hi Tony, I'm in marietta also near sprayberry highschool. My reeftanks a little over 4 months old now and is more like a frag tank lol but everything seems to be coming together.

As to water changes, you'll find most people use plastic but you need to use "food grade" plastic. I bought a bunch of stuff at target to do 15 gallon changes and a brute 44 gallon at home depot.
I contacted Sterilite (plastic container manufacturer) and they said that their plastic meets all the requirements for food grade. Haven't had any issues yet. I keep my DI/RO in it and have a separate bucket I make up for salt water once a week. I throw in a PH and a heater and let it stew for 24 hours before adding it.
 
There's no need for "aged" water but it is nice to have some handy!! Welcome
 
I have been winging it with my water changes. I use a few 5 gallon buckets and fill it up with tap. Then I would add the water conditioner and the salt until I get the right salinity level. Then I would let it age for at least 24 hours. Then I would change the water out. There has got to be an easier way to do this. I was thinking about getting a large garbage can from home depot, drop a power head in it and brew me up a batch of saltwater and always keep it handy. Then I heard plastic containers are bad, so I was thinking about getting a couple glass tanks to hold the backup saltwater. Are ro/di absolutely necessary or just nice to have?

A brute brand can from HD would be perfect and probably easier than you 5 gallon method. Plastic containers are not bad and a large number of people use them for sumps for their tanks on here.

For a salt water reef tank I would run nothing but RO/DI water as it takes out more stuff than just the chlorine that you drops are doing. For a fish only tank you can probably get away with tap water for a long time just as you are doing now.

Thank you all for the welcomes! I'm officially addicted to this hobby now. I recently bought another 55G tank that I am cycling. Already met a few of the ARC members and they have hooked me up with a skimmer, reef lights, live rock and corals. I have also been to a few of the sponsor stores. Feel like I have been driving everywhere since I have signed up on this site! Now I just have to decide what to put in my new 55G tank. I was thinking about filling it up with nothing but all kinds of zoas, they look so cool under the blue lights. Anybody knows what other corals look super cool under the blues? The coral frags that I have so far are zoa's, star polyps, blue mushroom, trumpet coral, and xenias. I want to get more frags!!! lol

Welcome from Kennesaw, the Leds will make zoas and Palys and mushrooms look super cool.
I have a 75 with just zoas and mushrooms with all Led lights and your right when the Blues are on it's a whole new tank . Looks like your off to a great start. I would suggest Joining the club with your membership you get 10% off at sponsors and it pays for it's self quickily .
