I bought some a few margarita snails and blue leg hermits, and also picked up a few larger shells from the lfs. I put everything in about 6 hours ago. Came back to check on the tank and half the snails had fallen off the glass and were upside down...so I flipped them. As I was flipping one of the shells over, this black and white fish swims out!! I only got a quick glimpse as it swam under the rocks and I was able to get a picture (not good, but maybe it'll help). The fish uses it's front find to perch up in the sand (goby-ish). It has a really large dorsal fin (reminded me of a butterfly)..not sure what this is. Afraid it may not be reef safe or good for my other fish. Any ideas???

Some type of shell swelling fish. Probably a blenny. Their was probably a blenny hiding in a shell and they happen to give you that shell. It was probably scared so it just decided to come out when you moved the shell. As far as an id I really can't say anything.

Looks like a lawnmower blenny. You just got a freebie.....

Yep. That's exactly what it is! Thanks man. Stress level is going down..

I was pretty freaked out when it happened. Didn't have any idea the fish would hide up in the shell like that. Pretty cool though..he's already nipping on some rock

If I decide I don't want this blenny in my tank..any idea as to how I could catch/trap him? It stays pretty tucked in the rocks right now

Yeah. After looking at pictures I'm pretty sure it's a sailfin blenny. He's got a really large dorsal fin when he decided to stick it up

Are you keeping it? I caught a blenny about 2 years ago ( out of the ocean ) and it's never bothered anything and loves algae and is all VERY fat. One thing I noticed is he isn't getting any bigger and he's only about 2 inches.... Just thought I would share..

With a little net I found on the beach... Haha. I just scraped a rock with the net and boom.. I have a little fish.
