Hey guys I need some serious help/advice with ick…I’ve lost nearly all my fish, which includes a Picasso clown, blue spot jaw fish and sleeper goby. It looks like I’m about to lost my remaining Picasso clown Midas blenny.

How do I solve this issue without taking the tank apart? I have other SPS, GBTA, CUC etc. so copper is not an option.

I’ve been doing 15% water changes each day and today will probably lower the salinity slowly down to about 1.014.

If you have dealt with this in the past, how have you beat ick?

Stop dropping your salinity. You want to keep the tank as stable as possible during this time. Hypo should only be practiced in a seperate system and is completely uneccessary in most cases.

Turn off all lights and keep them off for a few days. This will reduce stress. If you think something is in the water, you can do a large water change. Running carbon at this point would not be a bad idea. Make sure you are keeping the remaining fish fed heavily; this will help them fight crypto by themselves. Add selcon to the food if you have. Metrodiazonole is good stuff to add also.

Are you sure it's crypto?

I'm sure it's Crypto, started off with the usual small white spots and now i'm down to the heavy breathing and scratching on the sand/rocks.

Thanks for the advice Raj...I'll try this when I get home this afternoon and hope it helps!

Low salinity will be detrimental to your inverts and corals. Only do that in a QT.

Three times in 2 weeks Raj and I agree (I'm telling you - it's the Apocalypse...). Metronidazole in the food. The only thing I'd add to that is perhaps some garlic in the food to help mask the taste of the Metronidazole - it tastes nasty (and yes, I know what it tastes like - it's used in humans too).

And all this time I thought I was the only one who tasted it :yuk:

If you have Focus, use that with the metro to hide the taste and entice eating.

Dil-Give me a call or text me if you need anything.

Uh oh, Raj... we're about to disagree...

The Focus is a binder - it binds the Met to the food. It also has some antibiotic properties. To my knowledge it doesn't "enhance" the taste though (although I haven't tasted Focus - I promise!)

Seachem recommends either Garlic Guard or Entice (which smells like bananas!) to mask the yucky medicine taste.

According to Seachem, Focus makes the medications "more palatable". I haven't tasted this one either, but I figure something that is more palatable is more tasty.

Yep it does say that on the package. Last year when I went to their seminar, they suggested Garlic Guard or Entice to mask the taste. On Garlic Guard's label it says that it's safe for use with medicated foods, and gives an example using Met and Focus and tells exactly how to use the Garlic Guard with it...

OK so we're both right ;)

Jenn

actually focus taste pretty rough too......and yes i have tasted it.....not as much as metronidazole......i had some Focus on my hands after feeding my sailfin when he got a little touch of ich when i first got him.....didnt realize it....(yes im like a 2yr old and like to stick my fingers in my mouth)....maybe to fish it taste yummy....idk

That nasty metal taste/side effect of Metronidazole is awful. It's worse than the stuff itself. Blech. :-X

Jenn

Thanks for all the advice guys, I soaked the food in Metro w/ Focus this afternoon so hopefully that will help.

Unfortunately the picasso clown didn't make it but i'm hoping the midas blenny pulls through since it was eating.

I'll keep you posted on how things turn out.

Cheers,

Dil

But then again, dogs like the taste of dog biscuits.. I can't say its very tasty.. Maybe fish like bad stuff.. I have seen fish go for tang bomb so maybe they like horrible tasting foods.. :)

just follow this............too many "tricks" can cause issues of their own.

Dogs also like poop and dead stuff.:yuk:
How can an animal with such a keen sense of smell like the nastiest stuff.
Go figure.
