So below are some pictures of what I believe to be algae that has started growing on my sand bed. While the tank is somewhat new (4 months) - all the rock comes from my previous tank which was up for several years. There is so much info out there it is hard to keep the suggestions straight. I am guessing that I feed my fish too much - usually some dry flake/frozen food - along with one cube of freeze dried brine shrimp. Each morning - plus I add one small sheet of seaweed.
The tank is 170 gallons - with the following fish
Large Yellow Tang
Large Sailfin Tang
Leopard Wrasse
2 Snow Flake clowns
2 small black clowns
3 banggai Cardinal Fishes
Flame Hawkfish
Flame Angelfish
Coral Beauty anglefish
yellow coris wrasse

I have Skimmer - GFO - biopellet reactor

Suggestions on what type of algae the pictures show and thoughts on reducing or eliminating them.

Its Cyano.

Given the age of your tank, a Cyano outbreak is not too big of a deal. Red slime algae rarely hurts anything and it is not too hard to get rid of.

Here's what I would suggest:

1) Manually remove the algae (siphon the sand)
2) Cut back on feeding
3) Increase the flow to the affected area(s)
4) Do frequent water changes to remove excess nutrients/ phosphates

If the problem does not go away in a week or two, you can use red slime remove or other similar product to oxygenate the water. This will certainly kill the Cyano, but it will make your skimmer go crazy for a couple of weeks.

I hope this helps!

Spot on with this advice... With the skimmer, adjust it all of the way down, and slowly adjust it up. Red slime remover will drive your skimmer crazy. Keep your eye on it...

Had this a few months ago. The advice was spot on. One additional thing, be patient and don't give up. It will go away.
