How the %$@* do you get them primed? We keep turning the air pump into a water pump. :confused2:

Air pump is an aqualifter AW-20. Not sure of the HOB type.

fill the overflow up to it's drainage point and insert a long piece of tubing from the overflow box, into the inverted U section... suck out the air in the inverted U section and you're done...

Does it use a tube or does the overflow run across the whole width of the boxes?

The air pump will become a water pump once the siphon is started. It is how it maintains siphon, just run a hose from the output of the pump back into the front of the overflow box (the part in the tank) and you should be good.

here's a link to priming an overflow on youtube, it may not be the exact unit you've got, but it will give you an idea of how it's done..

you've got to make sure the overflow is full before you start...

Any overflow utilizing a pump shouldn't need any priming. It should be as simple as making sure there is water in the front and back of the overflow boxes, and turning the pump on. I have a feeling the outlet of the pump was not directed anywhere, however an Aqualifter can pump water and air. It will pump the air out of the overflow lifting the water into the overflow section. Then gravity will take over and the overflow should start running. The pump will remain on and pump water (Aqualifters only pump 3gph) so you have to put that somewhere, and the best place to put it is back into the overflow.
