Any overflow utilizing a pump shouldn't need any priming. It should be as simple as making sure there is water in the front and back of the overflow boxes, and turning the pump on. I have a feeling the outlet of the pump was not directed anywhere, however an Aqualifter can pump water and air. It will pump the air out of the overflow lifting the water into the overflow section. Then gravity will take over and the overflow should start running. The pump will remain on and pump water (Aqualifters only pump 3gph) so you have to put that somewhere, and the best place to put it is back into the overflow.
