How big can this darned thing get anyway?

I've seen a few not recover from being split with a razor blade so there is some risk. I'm with Dave...leave it be!

Ive read that one way to get it to encourage splitting is by getting it to mount itself on 2 seperate rocks.. but ive never validated this info myself

I saw one split about nine times, was in a 600 Gal tank with a 50Gal wave maker every fem min, 2 X 1000w MH. Good luck

I have had one RBTA for over a year and a half and it has not split. And another for a year that has not split either.

Disclaimer: I realize that my coral placement is random and frankly kind of "wrong"... but since I've been building the new system I am just putting stuff wherever it is easiest, knowing it will be totally reworked shortly anyway.

That's a nice one :) I've seen brown ones get that big and bigger. Some split eventually, some don't.

I wouldn't force it either - sooner or later it will likely split.

I learned over the weekend there are two strains of BTA (I haven't researched this further yet, so there's my disclaimer) but somebody I know who worked in the wholesale end of the trade for many years told me that there are some that get HUGE (like yours) and some that stay relatively small. They have both sorts of RBTA in their tanks and they have about 10 of 'em now (and I want some!)

I have cut one before (Sandie's, came from Rob) and it healed marvelously... but I'm not cutting this one. :)

If it's not splitting you're doing something right! Just keep taking pics & doing as you are... Very beautiful nem...

Mine is pretty close in size. That's a 120, and it's grown since that 2 month old picture. I'm guessing its probably close to 3 feet in diameter. I desperately want a split, since it's size is shading out a lot of the corals below it. Furthermore, this one tends to look a little better when it's smaller.

It's split once already, but that was 8-9 months ago.

my buddy had one that was 3 foot across it nook up a large protion of his 220g untill it split now theres two about the size of yours my personal best on one was 16 inches (split now into 3 smaller ones) and the smallest i have is the size of nickel fully open

It's really remarkable how it can disappear into the rocks at night. Sandie's RBTA is only about 7" across, but it is visible even when it is "closed". Her clowns are in a constant battle over who gets to host. They go back and forth but aren't willing to share yet (they don't seem like they will ever pair... and the more they grow, I guess the less likely it is).
