hello everyone,
i have had a yellow tang for almost a year now.
i am looking at a sailfin tang and a purple tang that i want to add together.my question is,how do i introduce them together to keep them from fighting.
as of now my yellow is in a 55 gallon.but i will adding all of them to the 75 at the same time if thats what i need to do.right now i have a green mandarin, neon goby and a starry bleeny in the 75 with lots of soft corals
thanks for the help,willie

I don't imagine this mix will do too well together considering they are all from the same tang family. If you must I would make sure the purp was smallest, sailfin med and yellow largest. Introduce them at the same time and cross your fingers... Imo

Sailfin tangs can grow to over 1' in length. The recommended tank size far exceeds 75g. You are pushing it with one Zebrasoma</em> tang in a 75g. I would never put three in there, especially one that grows as large as the sailfin.

thats why i ask for the info before i purchase.all the lfs will tell you "sure there compatable they would never oyutgrow that size tank".
any other ideas on what to add.i would like to have something will stay in water column and not just hide or come out at night.
thanks again to all who responded so quickly

Good on ya! I just added an aiptasia file fish to my tank and he is one of the most active fish I have!

You could always try a small reef safe wrasse or a trio of anthias. Both are very active. However, you need to make sure either the wrasse and/or the mandarin are eating prepared foods. Otherwise, you'll need a boatload of pods in your system. I keep a melanarus wrasse and a mandarin and both eat my frozen blend of food.

Why?

I've always had best success in smaller tanks with multiple tangs with ones from different families. Always seen purples beating up anything that looks like themselves

That is a small tank for that many tangs. I would be the most concerned with the purple. They are notorious for bullying the other tangs. Also, a concern would be stress which could lead to lateral line disease. Need to feed varied diet with veggies.

I would opt for a few fairy wrasses. They are colorful, active, and relatively hardy.

I have a yellow and purple tang in my 120g and the yellow is the more aggressive of the two. The do well together but I agree that it wouldn't be a good idea to place them in a 75g.

I have a few tangs of the same family. It's hit or miss. Sometimes they get along well, other times it's like battle royale. My tangs were actually added at different times, the only one I ever had an issue with was a gold rim.

I recently got a Hawk fish, and he is pretty active without too much fear. He does stay on the coral and rocks of course. Different variaties can add different color, and some are more reef friendly than others from what I've read. I have a Bristletooth tank and Scopas in the 125 and they are both fairly active when my Chromis fish are out (acting as dither fish). My clowns stay where they are hosting so I don't see them much. My Mandarin is in the front of the tank as much as the rear, but another rock dweller.
