How do you dose for alkalinity?

I'm looking at dosing or alkalinity. I see there are several products to do this with. I used BRS as a marker and they have Sodium Bicarbonate and Sodium Carbonate. Being forever since chemistry (over 35 years).....what's the difference and which way is better. Can't you bake baking soda and make one of these (I've forgotten but at least I remembered that much)?

My system is 115 gallons. I use a Nilsen reactor. I also dose 1oz of calcium chloride from brs 3x a week, 1 oz sodium bicarbonate 2x a week, 1 oz mg sulfate/chloride 1x a week with a 10 gallon wc 1 x a week. My sps is growing like weeds! Look super.

i use brs stuff it works great and take all the head ach out of it. by useing the system and testing every day for two weeks and then once a month works good very nice stuff

You know you can make this for ohh say $.50 a gallon. Its baking soda/Sodium Bicarbonate.
Same with Calcium - Calcium Chloride (BRS) ohh say $.50

No secret potion in them. Just the stuff thats already in the water. Just FYI. For me 64oz would last a few months for $13.00 + shipping. 1 tub a Calcium Chloride is $13.60 I bought it 3 years ago and still have a 1/4 a bucket left.
