How often to feed clown fish?

I have two tangerine albino clown fish and a starry blenny. They are all small. I have been feeding 2-3 times a day and it seems like it's never good enough. Whenever I am near the tank, they come up to the top as if I was feeding them. Am I under feeding or over feeding?

And the starry blenny eats everything... Should I be feeding him something in particular?

Please help! Still fairly new to the hobby.

Thank you

Omar

I think your probably
Fine with what you are doing. My fish act the same way every time i pass by.

55 Gallon DT, 30 Gallon Sump, Dual DIY PVC Overflow, Tunze Protein Skimmer, Jier JR 400 Gph return pump, 4 bulb T5HO w/ Night LEDs, 2x 850gph Koralia

My clowns get fed maybe every other day in my 10g. If you're doing 2-3x a day, I hope it's small amounts.

It is small amounts. Should I back off on feeding?

I mean, if you're not having any algae issues and you're keeping up with water changes, you should be fine. But I don't see the need to feed that much. To each their own really.

Maybe because you don't want your nitrates to spike up

I do a 5-7 gallon water change weekly depending on nitrate levels. Everything is stable in the tank. I have a fighting conch that keeps the sand bed clean as well as a cleaning crew.

Do you have any suggestions on feeding my starry blenny? I've noticed him eating the flakes when I feed my clownfish and he randomly grazes on the live rock.

My experience with flakes is don't do it. They had my PO4 run away from me. I feed Mysis or brine every other day and it was recently advised to me to go to pellets. As far as their begging they are only showing you the love. Mine always come to the glass/surface when I get near the tank:fish:

Your tank looks great

And then when they get older they'll bite you whenever you stick your hand in as thanks!

Yeah.....they definitely have a Napoleon complex.

Is there any LFS that has brine shrimp? And thank you!

They already do nip at my fingers every time I put my hand in the tank. Lol.

Every one of them should have frozen. I think the Fish Store is selling live now.

Alright. Didn't know if I needed live brine shrimp or not.

Creations Reef used to sell Live Brine. However, last I heard, Brine shrimp offered little to know nutrition.
Since it looks like you have Coral in there along with your Fish...why not try "Reef Frenzy" there is a "Nano blend" as well.

Either of the above will feed your entire tank. No need to go buy this, and that, feed this a different day, that another day.

You can put it in the tank straight from the frozen bag, and the fish will pick at it until fully dissolved. Or, thaw it in a ice cube tray/cup, and then siphon it up with a Turkey Baster, then squirt it in front of the Pump Return or Power Head.

Your fish will love you for it, so will your corals.

You are in Smyrna so head up to Optimum Aquarium, they are the only store selling it on this side of town. Otherwise, head over to The Fish Store, or Pure Reef. They are both fully stocked with the latest packs of food containing Probiotics.

There are countless YouTube video's from our very own Thomas Brown, as well as customer hosted videos. You can also Google LRS Foods for more info.

Edit: BTW, thank you for your service as a Fire Fighter!

Thank you for the suggestions. I am going to go up to Optimum Aquarium after class and look at everything. It seems as if the pellets and flakes aren't enough for them but that's all they were eating when I first got them. Then when I fed my corals, they would eat what was left over. I was concerned about when I was feeding flakes and pellets daily, they weren't getting the nutrition they needed. I will definitely check out those videos as well.

And no need to thank me but you're welcome!

My fish (clowns included) look much healthier since I backed off the flake food and started feeding more with frozen cubes. I use a turkey baster to shoot the thawed mix toward shy guys.

I feed my breeders 3-4 times a day they eat mostly NLS pellets and I also feed frozen PE mysis and regular mysis once a day as well. If you are not breeding I would feed twice a day small amounts, or you will have algae issues. Pellets are perfectly fine they are high in proteins and that is what you want. Most frozen besides PE Mysis will be a lot lower in proteins. Just something to think about. Brine shrimp should only be fed as a treat. It is like candy to Clownfish, and has very little nutritional value.

You can tweak the brine shrimp into being somewhat nutritionally useful... if the brine's not newly hatched you can gut-load them with spirulina powder (the pure extract/powder, not the ground up tablets) by stirring some into the shrimp's holding water until green a few hours before serving them up to your tank.

Brine shrimp eat the spirulina, your fish/corals eat the brine shrimp before they could have fully digested it. It's like hiding a spinach salad inside a candy bar! ;-)

Still not a recommended staple, though. If you have something that seems to get stuck in an "eat the pellet, spit the pellet out" loop, try lightly crushing the pellets. My yellow clown goby seemed to have a hard time getting them down until I started doing this a year ago, even when feeding the smallest size (1mm or .5mm I think).

dosent matter what food you use all of them will contribute phosphate as it is what binds nucleic acids together to form dna and rna. and since foods are made with living things they will all have some phosphates.
