Ok so i picked up a hippo tang on Tuesday and was just looking at him a saw a few small white dots. Called saltwater city and they confirmed that it was ich. Told me to do a freash water dip with the fish. is there anything else i could/should do?

I used water from my tank with methylene blue and the ich was kaput.

Good stuff that meth blue.

Freshwater dips still scare me to this day. I know they work they just scare me.

i would reed the artical on ich in our arcpedia before doing a fresh water dip if not done right you can lose the fish ....if it is swimming around and eating i will leave it be and buy a few cleaner shrimp

Ok so i do not have a QT tank like it says. So if i do this dip will the fish just get it again in a few days?

dont do a fresh water dip, im not saying salwater city is wrong but in the wrong hands it will go wrong .

OK then what should i do????? And this is the first day it has had the bumps would he and my other tank mates be ok?? (see sig for those)

If you have a QT tank set up go hyposalinic. Hypo salinity as in 1.009... nearly BRACKISH hypo... is a GREAT way of KILLING parasites without the use of any foreign substances going into the water.

The ich parasite doesn't die per se when it falls off the fish. The fish's natural immune defensives will prevent the parasite from feeding at an opportune level so it falls off and lives in the sand for the next fish. Stress free fish with healthy immunes (ah the power of garlic) can withstand the ich. However we all know those little tangs can be stress buckets (hmmm reminds me of my mother....) so then the parasites have a new buffet.

If he's already in the tank then just keep him as stress free as possible and here's the toughie... don't add fish for another 45 days- the life cycle of the parasite- and then you shouldn't have the parasite in your system.

Then for the next fish you can use the QT and make sure it starts out strong from the beginning.

So then just let it work its way out? Dose garlic? or put it in a tank and have the salinity a 1.009?

What corals do you have in the display?

Ok i've been reading the wiki artical and almost every treatment involoves QT, or diping the fish. I am very neverious about doing the dip. Also i have a UV on my tank why did that not stop it?

here is an option that worked for me, but I wouldn't recommend it because it goes against most trusted leaders in the reef field. It 100% definitely worked for me. At the time, I only had soft corals in my tank, and I did not have any STONY corals whatsoever! ALL fish recovered 100% due to this treatment. It was not from luck, immunity, or whatever. My tang is now 2 & a half years old, but was near death at the time Almost all of my fish had it at the time, and all recovered that were alive at the start of the treatment. I know there are solutions that work 100% of the time, unfortunately, this is not one of them.

1) I installed a UV light. (it has since been removed)
2) I used "Reef Safe" Kick-Ich. (quoting from marine depot's site) It is a water treatment for the control of ich (a.k.a. "whitespot disease") in marine and freshwater aquaria. It has been scientifically formulated to eliminate the free swimming, infectious stage of the ich life cycle while being safe for all freshwater and marine aquaria. Kick-Ich has a long shelf life at room temperature and is supplied in easy to use, self-dosing bottles. Safe for all fish, corals, invertebrates and macro algae, as well as the facultative anaerobes and nitrifying bacteria essential to biologic filtration.
3) I talked directly with the owner & used a higher dosage that compensated for me running a skimmer for 12 hours a day. i also DOSED TWICE after a 2 week break.

I long ago decided to stay out of the Ich debate but Thank you Dawg about the kind words about the Wiki I posted. I think it gave a pretty good overview of ALL types of treatments with pros and cons of each. My latest "favorite" method of treatment is a Formalin dip with Meth blue. I think it is a better first choice then copper in almost every case.

Mockery, If you have some specific questions, you are always free to PM me. I have spent a long time testing methods and treating fish. It is not a daunting task as it might seem. I will always give you all the options and let you make your own decisions as what is best for your tank.
