OK , this time i want a tank without the manual overflow box and tube!! got a man wanting to sell me a good tank and stand. 160 gallon, 48x36x22 , but it has been drilled. the next tank i want i was thinking more a built in overflow box and i take it those tanks are drilled on the bottom side. PROS and CONS please of drilled on side or back tanks VS built in overflows?? advice n comments please from the experienced reefer/fish combo tank owners, BTW I can get the tank and stand for $500 bucks.:huh::doh:

Where specifically has the tank been drilled at? If its the bottom you have options if its the back you have several options also. Never seen one drilled on the side but hey there is always a first time.

Chef, It's drilled with overflow back left corner. Have not seen tank since it was at the store, going to look at it today. Cannot remember if its bottom or back drilled. I am thinking upper back left corner. not on the side. oh it was a frag show tank. size is 48x36x21 not 22 high

IMO bottom is slightly less prone to leaking because the tension is uniform (think of how a heavy set of keys wears on a cars ignition from hanging so long). That being said, I have a tank with holes on the bottom and one with holes on the back side and neither have leaked in the year they have been set up. I sort of like the back as it gives more room in the sump area but that's mostly due to my use of hoses rather than hard plumbing. Neither have an effect on the way the tank itself is drained, that's all in overflow design.

Thanks Frantz, this gives me a better understanding. The setup i am going to build will have the sump in my basement.

I have a 150 gallon aga duel center overflow complete set up,turn key for 900$ Or trade. Its just now 2 years old.

if its going to be a long term tank wait and get what you want. I don't think there is a better option out there right now than coast to coast external IMO.
