Interesting 2 part dosing video:

I didn't think it was a good idea to dose all at one time like he does in the video?

Anyone have an opinion good or bad?

Is dosing a lot easier than I think it is or is this video over simplifying the process?

Seems to pretty straight forward. I'm about to start with the same kit. I hear the key is to start slow and not add too much in one day. My ca and mg are low so it seems like a good option. Gotta start somewhere! Oh and I will be manually dosing.

I just bought two BRS dosing pumps, but I don't think I will be using BRS 2 part. Instead I'm going to use Prestone driveway ice melter (calcium carbonate) for calcium and baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) for alkalinity.

LOL really? How do the prices compair?

Curious as well any particular reason?

It's not like your running a 600 gal system...lol
those chemicals are full of impuritys, I would use seachems powders.

I know it's cheaper, but I haven't taken the time to compare. I just don't see the need to order from BRS when there's a grocery store and Home Depot 5 minutes from my house

I don't think they are full of impurities, all kinds of calcium chloride has been tested for use in the reef aquarium. I'm pretty sure that BRS calcium chloride is not 100% pure. I read something about sulfur levels building up if you don't do WC

In the first link there is another link regarding the impurities in different kinds if calcium chloride.
In the Dow brand (which I believe is the same manufacturer of Prestone driveway ice melter) the levels of purity is about the same as "aquarium grade" calcium chloride

I would'nt dose sulfur unless I was tested for it...lol

Well, I wasn't considering LFS as a source for two part. It was between Home Depot/publix and BRS.

Lol

One thing I would like to recommend, I was always taught that when you use Baking Soda ( weather BRS, Arm and Hammer or whatever) pop it in the oven first. I don't think that was covered in the vid. Baking will drive off the extra moisture and CO2 then use is directly, or store it in a desiccator, but honestly if I had one of those laying around I'd probably just turn it into a nano anyway

well if something ever goes wrong in your tank and you're trying to figure out what it is, don't forget to think about the Prestone you put in there..lol

By that logic anyone using BRS calcium chloride should think the same thing if anything goes wrong in their tanks. Randy Holmes-Farley Ph.D. Analyzed the Dow flake calcium chloride with mass spectrometry and concluded that the impurities are below what would be considered toxic levels in reef aquaria (and then wrote a guide on how to use it in homemade 2 part). Good enough for me

a bottle of the seachems "reef builder" cost $10 and last me for months. aquarium grade chemicals for me.

At least it won't freeze this winter!

I'm a 2 hr drive from any those cool sponsors in the big city, In a pinch ( usually when forgotten to get some and I know my next trip to a pet store is 3 months away), I've tried the deicer and the Damp rid method for calcium before and nothing died.

I'm pretty sure baking soda is the ALK part of 2 PART, well that or Sada ash, we need to talk to Giuliano about investing in a sarcasm font

Edit: Oh and isn't one of the major impurities Magnesium, I might need to go back and read the article and compare the MSDS sheets.?
