Interesting 2 part video. Opinions?

Is this one part calcium, alk, and mag? I just read a little bit about it but I'm confused. Do maintain levels of all 3 with this one product?

I mean do you use BRS 2 part, not which dosing pump

No that product is for alk and is very potent, "advantage calcium" is for cal and mag.

What you will find in the driveway deicers, IME, is stuff that looks like dirt. I bought a 50# bag of magnesium chloride ice melt once to use in Randy's 2 part recipe and that was the way it was. They don't have to be as pure as the stuff sold by BRS. Take a cup of the driveway deicer and a cup of the BRS product, dissolve in water, and you will probably find brownish residue at the bottom of the driveway melt. Not necessarily bad for the tank, but it is not as pure because it doesn't have to be because it is going on a driveway. The risk you take is not knowing what is in the residue. Probably the same for calcium chloride ice melt products as well. Heck, some of the ice melt products have a lot of urea in them as well.

I had the same results with the stuff from the pool store, which was like Dow pellets. Brown residue at the bottom of my dosing containers. Im not sure what it was, but not knowing I didn't feel comfortable putting it in my tank. I have never seen any residue like that with the calcium from brs. There is something to purity and for as much money as we spend on our tanks why be uncertain?

Lol I feel pretty certain that if you read the link where Dow flakes were examined by a Ph.D. with a MASS SOECTROMETER (very very fancy lab equipment) you would see that we know exactly what the impurities are, and he compares them to levels found in natural seawater as well.

Again, this study was done a month before the same guy published a guide on how to make your own two part using the Dow flakes.

The different grades normally refer to the amount of testing done. A lot of the time the stuff that isn't good or aquarium grade is the same stuff, without the extensive testing. But it had been done by a reef chemistry expert on several different kinds of calcium chloride.

Further more, a bunch of people on reef central use it, even people who do maintenence sai they use it in clients tanks for extended periods of time with no adverse effects. The levels of impurities are below toxic, and if you're doing water changes, you're pulling the stuff back out of the tank before levels have a chance to rise up too much.

Have you used this stuff in your tank or are you just saying its possible? I would be willing to try it but not without som eone one with first hand experience.

Do you have a link to "Randy's 2 part recipe"? I would like to read about this.

Yeah this is the "new and improved" version and the links to the original article is referenced at the bottom of the page.

You can see that the Prestone driveway ice melt is listed as one of the acceptable forms of calcium chloride.

Wow you learn something new everyday! I will definitely have to research this topic more. It looks like a viable option if i ever decide to dose 2 part.
