I have had both of these for several months. As you can see in the picture, the larger one has some cotton looking areas on it.

Is this a shedding process or something to worry about? I'm just about ready to move them to the new dt and don't want a crisis now.

Edit: Sorry, my pictures are always sideways.

It might be on its way out. I have seen sponges bounce back from that state, to some extent, but I've also seen them just keep withering from that point too.

It may not be getting enough to eat.

Would you say the trip to the much larger dt would be good, or a risk for the new system?

Edit: I have been thinking that it did not look well, but I have had no problems in the tank it is in as far as the fish go.

The only things that usually go wrong with sponges is too much exposure to air, and starvation.

never never ever let a sponge come out of the water air gits traped in the cells and caues them to die, mold, melt if your larger dt has ben running for a year + then it is a good idea to move it. use a tupaware container to transport it between tanks (keep it sumurged the whole time, if you have any amino acids use them
sponges require strog current but not direct and feeding yous should be 1 or 3 times a week using a filter feeding food 100-2kym specrum pellets work also let thm desolve first
if its still not better in a week or it gits worse frag off the infected parts the

It has never been exposed to air. The new dt has only been running one month. Do you think it is ok to move it or could it compromise the tank?

If you move it, bag it up under water. I would say a one month old wont have an adequate food source for a sponge.

That must be the problem Ringo. It is in a tank that is only six or seven months old and went in when the tank was a few weeks old. Glad to know the lfs hooked me up.

Have any air bubbles shooting out from the return/skimmer into the display?

Some bubbles, not many though. They never told my wife to feed plankton, so it is basically starving. I bought some but I don't know if it is too late.

My lfs told me that it is safe to use scissors and cut away the bad and hopefully save the rest.
