I have a 55g display tank. (48" x 12" 3/4 x 20" 3/4) LxWxH

I found a use 50g tank as for my sump (48" x 12.5" x 19 ) LxWxH

I am looking to do a refuge sump. Would this sump work? I am also looking for a set up that wont make my water bill go crazy!

Is there a certain size the sump needs to be for certain display tank size?

The bigger the sump the more water volume the more stable your tank will be and will be more forgiving. I would say the temp u keep your house and hoe hot your lights are would be more of what causes evap. I think u should be fine with that sump as ling as it fits under your stand if the lenght and width is good the height will need to be able to allow u to access the sump easily. Go google sumps and u will get a good idea of the 1000 different ways u can do it.

Only real requirement is that it can fit all your in-sump equipment. Practically speaking, you want to use as large a sump as your stand allows.

Of course, too skewed in one direction can cause issues... for example, I forget who, but somebody not long ago was going to use a Dart for a return pump and something like a 20g long for a sump. Whirlpool anyone? LOL

If you can house a 50g sump under a 55g, you will be spoiling yourself with room in the sump. Just make sure you can fit it in the stand... typically a 55g stand won't let you use a 48" sump underneath, as the clearance below is less than the top space.

Agreed. The bigger the better - so measure the footprint of the tank and that of the useable space under your DT. However, keep in mind that you may need room under there for other stuff such as any power strips, ATO reservoir, etc. As far as your water bill, you won't be able to tell too much of a difference, seeing as it is a fraction of a cent per gallon.

Edit: I also agree that the 50g most likely will not fit. My 75g stand barely has enough room to house a 30L under the DT.

Thanks guys a lot of great info. Well I was planning in using about 30-40 g in the sump. As far as fitting under my stand I already know that big bloody ******* doesn't fit. Lol My sump will be kind of outside real close behind my stand. My stand has an open rear and top.

As far as the sump refuge design I still don't know yet. I plan in doing a complete water change every 6 months is this good?

I actually was able to come up with a wall push in aquarium design, kind of like a 3D look. I got some of my sketching done by hand. I been trying to see if I can get it done in a 3D model on the Google sketching.

I'd advise against this... stability is a very important factor in a successful reef. A total water change could be necessary at some point if you have problems, but it could prove stressful on your livestock... so I'd avoid that as a maintenance practice.
Much better would be 10-20% every month.

I'm starting to thing 15% a month sounds good. Since the sump is going to be filtering almost half the water of my DT.
