JBD's cube upgrade

Thanks. I was just sitting in front of the tank thinking through the door and trying to make sure I haven't forgot something....

The sump is going to prevent me from installing door hinges. Not the end of the world, I will just use magnetic catches and the door will be removable.

That's what I did with the entire door on my stand.

Loving the controllability of the AI Prime. I am guessing the other full spectrum AI fixtures work the same way?

Build a drawer front like you would if you were going to build the whole drawer. It would overlap the opening so it looks like a closed drawer but a set of small hinges would be screwed to the back of it and to the cross member at the bottom of the DJ strip.

Well, I did away with the drawer idea. The standard face frame hides the dj strip which satisfied my liking. Sometimes simple is better.

I got the door frame cut and glued. I used half lap joints for construction which is a method I have never used.

Finished the door. I nixed the drawer idea. I think it looks cool.

Glass door. It was hard to get a decent picture. That room has no lights other than the window, a floor lamp, and the desk light.

that is some clean glass, can't even make it out.
guess cause it's new.
is the blue light under the tank led, it would be cooler if you can get your hands on a string of RBG leds with the random controller so you can get it to change colors, really cheap on ebay.

I really like the prime from a controllability stand point. It is very easy to setup a schedule.

There are lots of online reviews stating that the mounting bracket is garbage. Maybe I got lucky... As mine has been great. I suspect some of the poor bracket reviews come from people not following directions.

Time will tell whether or not it produces enough light. The fixture is very small, and there are only a dozen or so LED's on the puck. I am slowly ramping up the power on the fixture with each week that passes. Once I see a good response from the corals, I will stop. Or, if I see negative responses, I will stop and go back down.

My move from the 20 high to a temporary cube and finally to this cube caused a little cycle. It ended Friday. The corals are looking a little rough at the moment. I did the first water change today, so hopefully the water quality comes back around and stabilizes.

Yes, it is an LED strip. I just needed a little light down there so that I can see what's going on from time to time. It will be off most of the time. A rgb string would be pretty cool.

TANK PROFILE:

20" cube, approximately 30 gallons, with a glass cages overflow kit (single durso)
DIY sump made from another 20" cube.
Jabeo dc6000 return
2 Jabeo RW-8's for flow - currently these are synchronized wireless and in "C" mode.
BRS Dual Reactor with carbon in one side and matrix in the other.
Reef octopus 150 classic skimmer
AI Prime for lighting

The next item on my to do list is buy an ATO. This would be followed shortly thereafter with a cabinet to go beside the tank to house the ATO reservoir amount other items.

After that, I'm considering the addition of an algae scrubber, and I have a doser that I could hook up as well, but we'll just see how things go without it. I don't have a huge demand for calcium and alkalinity at the moment, so things should stay relatively stable with no dosing and weekly water changes.

Lastly, I'm debating the addition of a canopy.

I forgot about having this 18w UV laying around. I purchased some new bulbs from eBay. Should be here within a week. Anyone have experience with eBay UV bulbs? They were $5 as compared to the 40 or 50 I saw at online retailers.

Any concern with running a uv with carbon dosing? It seems counter productive as the first thing a UV does is kill bacteria.

Argh!

Apparently the Red Sea mg test goes bad after a while. Guess how I know!

It's a good thing I didnt go too crazy with the supplements. Bought a new kit. I am at 1540.
