Got in a conversation with a guy at one of the fish stores in Jax. Guy tried to tell me heaters from Walmart were just as good as any. I call total bc on that you get what you pay for.. with that being said I use a finnex heater with a built in digital temp display. What do you guys use?

Jager...tried and true. Too long but cheap to replace if I need. I see expensive heaters failing all the time and when a 500/600 watt heater gets stuck ON somehow...even with fail safes..it cooks water fast.

I run a brs titanium heater hooked to a inkbird and also on my apex. I guess this topic can blow up cause everyone has their own opinions. If it works it works. Ive had 2 brs heaters go out fast. But despite where u buy and what kind you buy everything today is made alot cheaper than 5 years ago.But i will tell everyong keep a backup heater regardless if it came from walmart or brs

I think you get what you pay for is a very good outlook to live by. That being said, I think that can be a skewed assumption in the reef industry. Price in the reef industry can indicate quality OR specialty. Specialty as in its a low volume feature or item that only has value in our relatively small hobby so they have to charge more to make it at a acceptable profit. I think this is more frequently the situation than quality in our hobby. To further complicate it, I think some manufacturers try to convey "specialty" by labeling it as reef or marine specific equipment to justify charging more.

Heaters are a good example of this. They are used across many adjacent hobbies. They all do the same thing. The one exception, most marine branded heaters have temperature control where as most marketed to freshwater or reptile/amphibian hobbyist do not. Sure, to be fair, this feature adds value and cost to the product...but almost double the price in some instances? Probably not. Meanwhile, most reefers set their temps the same range anyway. A heater preset to 78 degrees would satisfy the majority of reefers, but if you go on BRS they don't sell a single heater that doesn't include or require third party temp control. As a result, you end up spending 2-3 times as much. A preset 300W heater at Petco runs you $55 or less. A 300W w/ temp control heater at BRS starts at over $120.

As for quality, I have used most of the major brands at this point and haven't seen much of a difference. Any of the big guys have relatively low fail rates, it just sucks when they do and usually creates a stink in the community.

I honestly think a replacement plan for things like heaters is best, regardless if brands. I replace my controller and heaters annually during Black Friday.

I have had bad luck with heaters these last few years.

I'm not sure where I stand. In the last 3 years I have had 2/3 cheap heaters fail and i have had 1/2 expensive heaters fail.

Luckily they failed in the best way possible and didn't boil my tank. It was the main reason I decided to buy an apex to hopefully catch equipment failing before it can cause a problem.

I think when it comes to heaters it's all about luck. I know people who have gone years with cheap heaters and never had an issue, and people with expensive ones that a malfunction nuked their tank.

I like the finnex titanium ones. Ive never had issues with the smaller ones controllers, but usually use the larger (800-1000w) bare heating element with an ink bird(on my apex)

I have never been a fan of having a glass or plastic heater in the tank.

Been waiting to hear if I’m crazy on this one… I have been running two jaegars into a splitter onto the hot side of an inkbird controller , both set to slightly under the desired temp so they share the load and cycle off an on with a minimal (.5-1.2 degree) swing throughout the day summer to winter.

I’m sure one of both will fail but the inkbird yells at me when there is a drop and will shut them off before the tank boils. Definite over kill but had a heater fail and figure why not use the backup.

I had a stuck on failed heater once from Petco (don't remember the brand). It happens when I was in my vacation. I came home with a whole tank DEAD. After that incident, I am extremely careful about what brand of heater I can use. One need a whole dead aquarium to learn his/her lesson.

Before I had a controller, I was 100% Jager. When I started using an Inkbird, I just used the Finnex Titanium heaters and it worked great. Over time I've changed and now that I have an Apex, I'll use whatever is cheapest.

I prefer to run 2 heaters rather than one big one. In my opinion, if you've got the room this is the way to go since it gives me a lot more time to react. 150W heater gets stuck "On" in my 80g frag tank, it'll take a long time to get it up to cooking temp (assuming that the other heater turns off when appropriate). If one of my 150W heater goes bad and won't turn on, the other 150W heater will keep the temp from absolutely crashing. Between the heater thermostats, the Inkbird and the Apex, I'm confident that if anything goes wrong with a mid-level heater, I'll be able to react in time to address the issue.

Ebo Jager, I’ve used them for 20 plus years and I probably have used the ones I have way too long, I do use a controller (Inkbird WiFi).

Third vote for finnex titanium. Used on every tank i've had with no issues. The inline controller is not that accurate on it's own, but with an Inkbird or apex controlling it is spot on. Everyone should run any heater with a thirdparty controller though.

@zoajohn, haha, i think you are the 6th vote for Finnex titanium.

Im remember back when my friends mocked me for using Finnex titanium. And am happy to see others are seeing their value.

Eheim in all my tanks and for the tanks I bring to frag swaps. I use a couple of Aqueon heaters for making salt water for water changes...

Currently running two BRS Titanium Heaters controlled by my Apex. Previously used Eheim, Time will tell if it works out in my favor.

If you are looking for the difference i think mostly the thermostat, durability (water sealing and material e.g. Titanium vs glass) and some may over state their wattage efficiency. But just my two cents, heaters are the leasti'd worry about...
