Looking at a Marineland 180 - Problem?

So I came across a really good deal I might take advantage of. BUT, there's a catch (of course). There's a one inch long chip on the corner of the glass. Otherwise, the tank is brand new and water tested. Is "Crystal Clear" Marineland's verison of starphire?

Can that be patched or otherwise fixed? It's on the front left corner unfortunately, but at least it's down at the bottom.

I think I saw this on Craigs list... Villa Rica.

Looks to be cosmetic. I have a similar chip on a 50 cube. But not sure if it would affect the integrity of a tank that size.

No glass experts out there?

That's the one. I'm talking to the guy now and will buy it unless someone can come up with a reason not to! Then I'll have to find a new place to live because my wife will kick me out of the house.

No glass experts out there? It's too hot to be outside, so somebody has to be home! :)

Why not call marineland and ask them what they think. They are experts with their own products.

Tried that, but they were closed. I can call manana. The guy says it's held water for two weeks.

Honestly I have a 90 with a Decent chip and I leak tested for a Week with a mag9.5 Pointed at the Wall just to test it.

If the deal is worth it maybe you can replace the one piece to save the worry.

Saltwater weighs more, so I wonder if that would make a difference. He says it's solid, I just worry about it spreading possibly.

It's hard to tell exactly where that chip is or how bad it is from the picture. Do you have any other pics?

In the end it's a risk. Can you handle dumping 180 gallons from that tank wherever you'd put it? If the answer is absolutely not, then I'd personally pass for something that I'd have more faith/confidence in.

Thanks guys. I'm gonna roll the dice. I can leave it in my garage and do whatever testing and repair I want on it until I feel comfortable. I'm in no hurry. $300 for a brand new 180 with a stand is too good a deal to pass up!

Edit:

Anyone have a truck near Villa Rica? :) I can trade plenty of beer!

I personally wouldnt take the risk. $300 now but what if that bad boy blows when you are out of town and have $1,000+ in livestock in it?

I wouldnt be able to sleep let alone travel knowing I had a time bomb in my house.

sounds like you have already committed but its my .02...

But if it has a nice stand you get buy it just for the stand. My stand for my 180 cost a lot more than 300. Just a thought

I'm just reading out there all kinds of ways to fix chips in tanks that are full. Surely there's a way to fix one that you have full access to. Heck, I could probably even replace the whole front piece and still come out way ahead. The same setup on-line is going for over $2K.

My thoughts exactly! I'll be following your build as well. Mine probably won't be for a few weeks.

So the stand is apparently a bit short (depth wise). This guy wanted to be able to drop down plumbing outside of the stand. It's fine length wise (73") and is 33" tall. However, it's only 19.5" deep. Fixable?

If not, I can try and sell or trade this one and would probably build my own.

That chip is very minor, from what I can tell from pic. I had one similar to that on an Oceanic 90 gal corner. I never had any problems with it. The tank is over 15 yrs old and still up and running at the present owner's house.
