Looking at a Marineland 180 - Problem?

I saw some stuff on-line where they bolted vertical 4x4's to the back and a 2x4 across those. Don't think that would work?

In all honesty, this is going from bad to worse in my opinion.

On a tank, ESPECIALLY a glass tank, the stand is EVERYTHING. Having a perfectly flat and level stand that will support the tank completely around the edges is absolutely key.

I'd be very hard pressed to try to hang a tank off a stand and would be even more reluctant at this point if that's how he ran it. Again, just my $.02.

He's never set it up, actually. I can try and find a proper stand. Just may be tough for a 180.

Yea from what I picture the tank would be hanging over in the back correct? If that's the case forget it and buy some thing that you will want. Cause your gonna put some money into it.

Taking ONE risk is, well, risky. But layering risks is a failure waiting to happen.

Just my two cents.

I would never setup a tank without support all the way around the base of the tank. I agree with some others that cheaping out on the tanks is not a good idea. The cost of the tank is MINOR compared to all the other equipment and livestock costs.

Do you think it would be OK if the tank were empty? Until I can find an alternative? To paint and plumb only.

Heck, I could probably even replace the whole front piece and still come out way ahead. The same setup on-line is going for over $2K.

I know - I have a 180, bought it brand new with nice stand/canopy and that is about what I paid. I sleep well at night. LOL

I am biased though - I had a 210 spring a leak in the night and made a pretty big mess before I woke up and found it. Lucky alot of members came over to help out and I had no losses, only alot of water on the floor. If I had been traveling, I would have had to move the damage would have been so bad.

It wouldn't be hanging over if you just built an extension to the stand. Maybe I'll PM Grouper.

I have a chip like that that occurred on my 120. Its in the back and unnoticiable once I painted the back of the tank. No issues ever. That chip is does not look structural so you should not have any issues. Just make sure that the streak just above the chip is an excess string of silicone and not a crack.

Personally after having a tank blow myself, spend the extra money and give yourself a piece of mind. You might save some money now but the headaches later def arent worth it...

You sound like you're trying pretty hard to justify this because it's a 'deal'.

What does your gut say?

FEED ME! :)

My gut tells me the tank will be fine. It's the stand I'm concerned about. I can always sell or trade it though. I just need to know if the tank would be OK on the stand empty? Number one, so I don't have to lift if from the ground, but also so I could go ahead and paint/plumb while I look for a proper one.

Trim stained or painted to suit will cover the chip if you do believe you can live with it and trust it.
