I have a customer who has a used 12-gallon nano (maybe JBJ or Current USA). He did have a Sunpod fixture on it, 1 x 70 HQI with moon lights. The fixture has failed and he's looking for an alternative light source.

He does not have the original hood, that was gone when he bought the setup - so my typical option of retrofitting the hood with LEDs isn't workable in this situation.

He keeps easy stuff - LPS and softies. Most of the traditional fixtures I get are 18" and wider - this is a 15" wide tank.

Any suggestions? He also doesn't want to break the bank... so AIs and the like are not going to happen either.

If he's handy or somoene else that is he could do some hanging leds or possible a par 38 bulb in one of those clamp on table office lamps I would imagine that would be adqaute for softies not break the bank and keep heat down they come in 20k too

Hanging likely isn't an option either... looking for something that is small enough to sit on the tank (legs, etc), or attach - clamp on option is a good idea...

Read my post, Thanh ;)... I think AI is more than this customer planned to spend...

If he could use a clamp type arm with the par 38 should be adequate only thing I see about this that they may not like is the spot lighted effect. Personally I'm a fan of it and think it adds a nice look to the tank and gives optional spots for low light corals as well as spots for corals that require more light.

The thread above may give a general Idea of light output and includes par readings

I said nano. It's only 300. Tell them to stop feeing their kids for a week and buy it :)

This is another option and only 49.95

Uh... yeah, Thanh... let me try that... NOT.

Superclown - interesting idea - checking into that as an option.

I just found this too: http://reefbuilders.com/2011/09/27/wavepoint-micro-sun-led/">http://reefbuilders.com/2011/09/27/wavepoint-micro-sun-led/</a>

For what this customer is keeping, this might be a good solution.

Yeah I've seen those too. The only snag with those is you're limited to their lamps - nobody else makes tiny T5s like that, that I'm aware of.

I think I'll suggest that Wavepoint LED for a try - clips right on, no legs, no fuss...

I keep seeing this, looks about perfect, w/ a new bulb it should be around 120. I bet you could haggle the price down to around $50 too....

The wavepoint would probably be fine for softies however I'm no led guru and my only experience I've had so far with leds was the Ecoxotic modules

Well I've been running a Panorama over my 12g for 2 years now - LPS and softies, no issues. Had a rose anemone outgrow the tank in it. I'm no lighting guru either - that's why I'm looking for suggestions :) (I loathe lighting questions...)

DB - not a fan of JBJ - have heard of issues with the Viper and IMO, metal halide is overkill for this customer's application - he got the fixture that just died, with the setup.

my zoas and LPS, even SPS, love this light.

Well with the Par38 he'd have to improvise a clamp-on light or something, yes?

Not familiar with Kessil - have heard the name mentioned, but don't know about those.

Kessils are probably a bit pricy, that would be around 300 with the gooseneck clamp. I'd say a par38 with a gooseneck light socket would be the best/cheapest option, should run under $120

Again, I don't think he's looking to spend that much. He tried a replacement lamp in the Sunpod and cringed at the price of that (70 Watt HQI - cheap, relatively speaking).

Thanks for the suggestions!

wait he tried a new bulb and it didn't work? What about the fuse on the ballast? Or what about about just a new ballast, I am sure you can get a 70 electronic ballast for around $50-60 or even less used.

I think the ballast may be causing the lamp to blow. My guys here looked at it and can't pinpoint the problem. The fixture is old, and corroded from salt.

Not sure if you saw Sean's links one was to a clamp with a socket for par 38 led
