Mh vs LEDs

Sorry did not read every post. Is money a concern? I bought the new ATI Powermodule LED with T5's built in to a single unit and LOVE it. Below is a link that describes it.

With that said if money is a concern I would go MH if heat is not an issue. I have run MH for a few years and have run LED for a couple of years and if those 2 are the only choice go MH. Get a nice reflector with a Radium bulb and you are set.

OK Guys! Here is the hard question for LED users, how are your Acroporos doing? I have a Reefbreeders 24 on a softies and lps tank and they are doing great, but before I buy more LED's they have to keep the acros happy too. If you have had your LED 's for 6 months or more how are your acroporas doing? Holley:D

Mine are doing fine now. I used the old Mark I eyeball for intensity levels when I first got the fixture and that was a mistake. After that little mishap, everything is doing a-ok.

Mine r fine bleached a little when first put them on tanks had to play with intensity but they seem to do as good if not better then t5. Dimmable is key like I said above I run mine at 55 percent and that only for three hours a day but my lights stay on for 10 hours a day.I know everyone has own opinion on lighting but since i have gone to leds I'm very happy but as I said above do your research on leds cheep is not always best, I myself went with radions I'm not sayin there any better then the rest but all the things u can do with them and the custumer support is top notch.just my opinion each there own

i have a diy led that i would put up against any light you can buy in all categories cost, color, and growth.

ARC....so nerdy our President breaks bones while bowling. :-)

Actually I meant Heath's tank the other one doesn't, mean much to the testimony of LEDs

Teal palys made me rebuild it from ground up 2 months ago...not much to see but small frags

well my current tank has been up almost 3 years and ive had a radion over it for more than 2 of those years but the only acro i have in my tank is a green slimer i got about 6 months ago and its grown from a 1" frag to a very nice multi branched colony. but i do have tons of montis that grow like weeds (my free corals threads should give you an idea lol) ive fragged my digi at least 10 times in the past year if i never fragged it it would take up a third of my tank by now. i also have a pocillipora thats grown nicely and i had a candy can colony that i sold at the auction that grew from 5-10 heads to over 50 under the radion so the leds are capable of satisfying most hard corals. i cant speak for the more finicky acros though as i dont maintain my tank well enough to even keep them (too lazy to do my wc on a schedule)

Edit:

yea i made the mistake of putting those in my tank when i started it. they took over two large rocks and i knew i had to get rid of them. i did but unfortunately some had spread to my glass and a couple polyps on other rocks so i still fight them to this day.

lucky you lol. those things are tenacious though ive injected them with reef napalm and it only seems to piss them off and i mean i took a syringe and needle and stuck it in their bodies and they still come back. but ill be doing a tank upgrade sometime this year so ill make sure that they dont get moved to the new tank even if it means bleaching every rock they are on.

Lol.. thats what I had to do.. and thanks again for the starter pieces you gave me.

I had good luck using Reef Napalm to kill the teal palys in my 465. I assume teal and crime de menthe paly are the same thing. I'm lucky enough to have a large enough tank volume so I can just blanket them with it. Took one big application to wipe out 95% of them, then several small applications to get the stragglers left behind. I just killed what I think are the last ones in the 465 a couple days ago, fingers crossed. But now, they are to the point where if they pop up there are just one or two baby polyps in the entire reef instead of hundreds, so I just keep an eye on the rock.

my tank is way too small for that kind of application.

no problem man im glad i could help get ya going again. if i knew you were doing a complete tear down i would have just given them to you in the first place instead of holding that vote lol and ditto for me on the small tank front. i tried to get a nice glob on each polyps mouth the first time around and it killed a couple but just pissed off the rest and then i injected them directly into their body cavity with similar results. does reef napalm lose potency if kept in a sealed container i made a small batch and have just been using it over and over since i only use like 10 ml per application.

If money is a concern I say the opposite, go LED. A quality ballast and reflector will run you $200-$300 plus $90 for a radium annually and a good $50-$70 annually in electricity at the least

You never had an SPS dominated tank which is what the OP says he's trying to go to.

From someone who would consider themselves pretty darn successful with an SPS/Acro dominated tank I'd say stay with MH or MH/LED combo. Unless you feel you are a master of the hobby with your husbandry and can compensate for the inadequacies LED's bring. I hear LED fans scream and yell every time this question is asked that LED's are awesome and great success. Then, I see pics of their tanks and the SPS they usually have are some monti's or Birdsnest with an occasional acro they are managing to keep alive. (But not thrive!)

Incredible success with Acro's in this hobby is rare to begin with. Maybe the top 2% do. Of that 2% I'd say 1% of them are having incredible success with LED's. For anyone with success claims either way, I'd suggest asking for pics. And lots of them. Or, it probably didn't happen...

I'm not saying it's impossible to shoot a PAR round of golf using only a 7 iron and putter. But, why would you want to try? Leave that to Tiger and friends because the rest of the real world is lucky to come close with 14 clubs in their bag.

Always a subject of heavy debate. I believe I'll just looked at LED supplementation and keep the MH. It's very hard to argue with proven success. I've enjoyed reading everyone input on this subject
