Mixing salt.

So I built this table and put a 20 gallon can on it for my rodi water. See photo...dark I know. But I was wondering I'd I could premix salt in it so I wouldn't have to do it in that jug. I'm guessing I'd need to put a power head in there to keep the water moving. Or can I even do it at all? Any advice?

**** ipad making photos the wrong way.

That would work great for mixing. Its what I use. And yes throw a powerhead in there to keep it circulating and to mix the salt.

I use a heater in my salt water mixing station. I only turn it on before a water change so it doesn't run all the time. I would recommend using a heater so you don't cause the temperature to swing in your tank during a water change.

I used to mix 30 gal at a time and use it over a couple months (smaller tank). I kept a powerhead in it but did NOT heat it because I would lose too much to evaporation due to the temp difference (was in my basement).

One thing you will see though is that you'll get a brown algae buildup inside the mixing container. It's normal and doesn't hurt anything.

Overall I think that mixing the day of a water change is better, but I have no hard data to prove this.

I do the same as JeF4y. No heater in my mixing water, and keep a powerhead in there for movement. Only difference is my water doesn't last a couple of weeks.

I see the brown residue in the mixing tank, but it hasn't hurt anything...

Best of luck...

I like Red Sea coral pro. I've never used anything else but I may try something different when my bucket is gone.

I use a 5g bucket to mix and my power head heats it enough to be close to take temperature.

Right now I am using Reef Crystals. But I am going to pick up a bucket of Salinity and half cut it with the RC for a little while.

TM bio active
Ph 8.3
Alk 7.5-8
Ca 410-420
mg 1350-1400

Test every bucket with Elso and Hanna test kits.

Mixes up clean. Mix 2 days before I use. Happy happy happy

FWIW, I saw someone on here mention one time that their water was cloudy if they mixed the salt in warm water. Sure enough, once I started mixing before</em> heating, the cloudiness was almost completely eliminated.

The cloudiness was never a problem</em> (it cleared up in an hour or so), but it's nice not to have it at all.

I think it depends on the salt you are using... I've mixed mine for as long as a week and never seen cloudiness. The film only starts to form after about of sitting for a week with no circulation... I am using Instant Ocean (for now)...

I do, keep mine covered, though...

Well right now I have a lid on mine as well along with the powerhead near the bottom. Are you using just IO or are you using the Reef Crystals?

I started my tank with IO then switched to Reef Crystals. Next week I'm going to be doing half cuts of IORC and Salinity.

Yeah. I'm in the process of phasing out my IO as well. It was fine for my tank when it was a FOWLR, but, want to step up my salts now that I'm going reef. Heard good things about Salinity, but can't find it here in Alabama.
