My first disaster and probably my last.

Well while I was away visiting parents in California. My chiller decided to give out and when it did, it went with a "bang". It blew the outlet where my skimmer and my ecotech power heads were connected to. So temp rises to 85 due to slow circulation. I have my return on low and was using my power heads primarily to move water.

My wife called and said the water was cloudy. I managed to tell her to put a little more water circulation by turning the return valve a little more (without the knowledge of the chiller was not working) Since I was coming back the next day I figured the corals could survive a little stress.

Right now most of my corals look pretty bleached with some polyps extension. However after several water changes, the water is still cloudy. The only fatality that I really noticed is my 8 inch clam. :(

I am going to do several more water changes as fast as I can make water. If things aren't going to improve I am thinking that I will get out.

make sure you get the clam out you dont need extra ammonia from rotting clam flesh

On no!

Hopefully you can get everything happy. If you need me to house a few pieces until you get it squared away, I don't mind helping.... Probably can't hold a lot, but if there are a few that you don't want to risk..... Lmk

Temps in my nano reached temps of 85 a few times. I know that's pushing it but wouldn't think that would push it over the edge completely. That sucks, hope everything else lives.

Man I hate to hear that. First off, I agree completely with what Seth said. Second, if there is anything at all I can do please let me know. I might be able to house a few things as well if that helps. I am a long ways from you but I will help if I can.

I am so sorry for your loss! You are an excellent reefer, please don't let this disaster make you leave the hobby and club. Sometimes life bites us and we have to pick up the pieces and put them back together! Let us know what corals didn't make it, I'm sure some of us my have frags of them. Holley

Oh no. I sure hate that. Your tank has always been awesome. Keep your head up and focus on what you do still have.

Let the dust settle before you make any final decisions, Trinh. You might find it is not as bad as it seems right now. I had a big crash in my 300 and lost some 14" diameter tabling acros that I had grown from a 1/2" frag, plus many others, and I am glad I didn't get out.

Hate to say it, but in a hobby like ours that is so dependent on mechanical and electrical components, something like what happened to you or me is just a part of the normal risk of this hobby.

I've been through a few disasters in the 38 years I've been in the hobby, whether it is freshwater, freshwater planted, salt fish only, or reef tanks, and I'm glad I didn't give up on it, as the hobby has been a very positive part of my life.

Don't go grocery shopping on an empty stomach
Seth... That's on of my Mom's favorite quotes. To this day, I can't walk in a supermarket without hearing her say that saying in my head.

Hey Trihn,
If you decide to stay in I'll be happy to frag the stuff I got from you plus a few extras. If you need some extra room. If got a 120 that has a lot of empty space (other then the the 2 corals you gave me) ... Let me know how I can help.

I know how you feel Trinh. Hope all is well with everything and you stay in the hobby. You came a long way so don't give up. Let me know if I can help.

Hang in there bud, you're a great reefer, keep us updated on how things turn out

Lo siento.

Do as other suggest and triage your tank... it should be able to bounce back if you get the bulk of that which has died out pronto. The SPS probably aren't too far gone if they're extending at all.

Dont give up Trinh. You created a wonderful thing and its worth hanging on to it.

<p style="text-align:left">sorry about your crash i hate to here about these things

don&#8217;t give up a lot of your corals will rebound given time i would remove the clam and leave all the corals until you know they are dead in a few days if they start growing alga with no polops i would remove them but not in till a few days
be careful with your wc as you can shock them a second time if you change to much to fast

i have had 2 crashes sense i got in to the reef hobby all by sum peace of equipment going ape s@#$ wile i was at work or out of town it was a major blow to me as i hate loosing pets and thought about getting out a few times but then i look at my tank now and am glad i didn&#8217;t.

a few things that may help you change your carbon every 24 hrs and place a bag in to the dt
change your gfo also it is probably toast now
add prime in small doses 1 ml for every 25 gal it will make all the nitrate and ammonia non toxic to your corals just be careful if you add to much you can shock your corals
i wouldn&#8217;t do more then 50% or system volume wc per day as it can lead to more problems

Sorry for your lose.....

Please hang in there. We just saw a side view sneak peek of your tank, remember?
Your tank is that beautiful because you kept it that way. I am confident that you will get it back in shape. We'd love to see pics of the full tank once it's back on track. Don't give up on your pets.
