My Fish is Sick, Isn't She?

Alright, first feeding of everything went great. ALL the fish ate the medicated food like they hadn't eaten in 2 weeks. Will feed a few more times today and continue to do that for a few days. Will keep you posted!

def not an expert on the subject, but this happened to my brother's powder blue tang and (I believe)a member on here recently and both of their tanks crashed shortly after. I don't want to freak you out or anything but as soon as I put an air pump in my brothers tank (it all happened in one day, and he was at work) things stopped dying. as a precaution I would make sure you are getting enough oxygen, because the ich on the tang was the first sign a couple days before the crash.

I know that a tang getting ich is common and does not mean that you are going to have a crash in two days, but I figured I would say something because it would be an easy thing to prevent

Thanks! I really appreciate that. It has a durso overflow, though, so it should be getting a lot of oxygen.

I would guess that low oxygenation was a result of another problem and may have been the stress that kick started the fish. If that were the case, it would explain why adding an air pump seemed to stop the ich when in fact it stopped what was causing the stress that caused the ich.

Shane, you are going to make it through this and you are going to come out better suited to care for your pets. :-)

That would work too. LOL. No, you will get through it. You have an advantage working from home. You have the time to do it right.

SOOOOO much better. I still see some stuff, but she (and all the other fish) ate the medicated food like there was no tomorrow. Her belly literally looked...well, probably like mine after Golden Corral. And she hasn't scratched against the rock since the first day.

That is awesome!

Seriously consider picking up a UV. And get a GOOD UV (or don't bother with one at all). Emperor Aquatics are expensive but they work and are pretty much the gold-standard in UV sterilizers. Money well spent!

Thats fantastic Shane. :-) I agree with Jeff that UV will help. But, if it works as intended, keep in mind that it will also kill any pods that pass through from the sump to the tank. May or may not be an issue for you.

But the good news in my opinion is that your tang is now better able to fight it off should it ever come back. I think it is like Chicken Pocks in a way. While they don't become immune to it, they do build up a stonger immune system which helps them in the future. I could be wrong but some pretty smart people seem to agree with that assesment and from what has gone on in my tank I would agree with them.

So Sunday night, she looked WAY worse than ever. Looked like white chicken pox all over her. The yesterday and today, she's back to scratching against the rock.

Yesterday she ate the medicated food well. Today, she's barely touched it -- though all the other fish have devoured it. All they've gotten since this started is food with the medicine in it, though I didn't feed as often on Saturday since she was (seemingly) so much better. None of the other fish show any signs of sickness.

She looks better today than she did, but the not eating is worrying me. She also doesn't seem to be as active.

Cause for concern?

Ich runs in cycles just like about anything else. Be patient, but, stay at it with whatever course you choose to take.

Remember: Just because the spots are gone doesn't mean the ich is gone or the fish is cured. It is also common for fish not to eat when they are stressed, or not feeling well. Did she eat anything at all today?

Feed without the meds and see if its not eating because of the taste or the stress.

If its the taste then try adding garlic.
If its the stress, check water levels. Try doing a water change. Make sure to vacuum the sand. I am sure most people here will disagree but you can physically remove ich from the sand. I believe it helps. Great water conditions are very important at this stage. If he is breathing heavy I would add an air stone and lowering the temp will help with oxygen levels. Just some ideas to help relieve the stress. They have all worked for me in the past.

Yeah, and her belly looks full, too. Maybe just too many days of stuffing herself has finally caught up with her :)

I have that problem too. :-).

Keep in mind that this is like antibiotics. Just because you feel better you need to take them for the time the doc said. Keep up with the mess for several days after she is back to normal.

Everything when it comes to ich is cause for concern. The biggest thing is eating. In my limited experience, when they stop eating, they're dead. Just a matter of time. Do literally ANYTHING you can to get this fish eating again.
