Back story

A couple months back I picked up a black ear tang (spot face) and after a few days it broke out with tress ick (did not spread to the other tank mates. So I began to dose with metro and focus with all food. Wanting to keep him eating, I began to over feed to ensure he was getting enough meds. I upped my water changes and turned up the skimmer to off set the over feeding. About half way through all this my skimmer went down and was down for about 7 days. Here came the red and brown cyno. I doubled from one water change a week to two. But now it's to late and I can't catch up.

Now when I say the cyno is bad, I mean it's bad. It's starting to take over the rock and has taken over the sand bed. I have broke down and now using chemclean to clear this up. It's taken its toll on my sps and hopefully this will help get me back where I need to be.

After looking back, I know I didn't over feed that much to cause all this and began thinking I over dosed the tank with metro and focus.

Any one ever had this type of out come using these meds?

Man I am sorry to hear that. I have been wondering where you were hiding. Now I know.

Can't give any good advice on what your facing right now but what I found woks best with the tangs I have is to do the following.

When I get a new tang I QT but only long enough to be sure it is strong and healthy. Couple days. I have a batch of food with metro and focus made up. As soon as I add the new tang to the display I start the meds. I don't do it as heavy as I would if they were infested but more of a preventative. Each tang will get a dusting of ich but are able to fight it off because of boosting the immune system.

Because I know adding any fish will trigger this same small outbreak, I do the same but QT those fish for a couple weeks.

Mike, kinda going through the same thing myself. No fish with ick, but my skimmer air line was blocked so it wasn't skimming for a few weeks. That coupled with the heavy feedings for the eel caused the same issues.

I'm doing more wet skimming, bi-weekly water changes (10%), vacuuming the sand bed and rocks and added a diamond goby to turn the sand over. That and not having the eel in my tank any more has helped some, but its still frustrating.

I wish I had known your skimmer was down. I would have lent you the one that I have sitting here for my 90g...when I get around to building it.

not sure of metro, but I've heard focus can bind up the food real well like clarity does to particulates. I personally RO/DI - methalyne blue any fish I get for 10 minutes and then drop them in the DT.

Thanks guys. I'm sorry I've been hiding but I have been super busy at work. But at the end of this week I will be taking the family to Disney. Long over due.

Rich I wish I had room for a qt but I don't. So I am very picky what fish I get and where it comes from. Yes I know I'm dealing with the devil on that.

Curt those frags have turned around and if you still want them I'm game.

Butch I have the matrix for you when we get a chance to meet up. Also if you need to combat your cyno with chem clean don't buy it due to me already having it. I am using the liquid type and not the powder.

Where can you purchase the methalyne blue? On my initial search I found the following video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FsEtUDIXFEk">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FsEtUDIXFEk. Is the process in this video similar to how you treat you fish. I understand the video is for fresh water fish and I'm interested in salt water fish.

Is your skimmer back up?? If not come get this ATB skimmer of mine. It will rock.

Yea it's back up. Thanks for the offer kris. Or I meant to say no it's broken and I may need it for a very long time. Lol

I bought mine from the aviarium in duluth.

Its similar to treat as freshwater fish except it is a little different reasoning. The methalyne blue allows the saltwater to absorb oxygen better and not be prone to osmotic shock like salt water parasites do. It is disorienting for the fish at first and they will play dead (fall on one side) and it is important to make sure the water is the same temperature.
Some people want the ph to be the same but I believe the osmotic shock is enough, just make sure it doesnt have a heart attack from a different temp.

Just leave them in there for 10 minutes and then exchange tank water with methalyn blue water at a medium rate.

The reason I say introduce the tank water slowly/medium rate is that if you drop the fish straight from the ro/di methalyne dip, it will breathe like it is having a heart attack when it gets in there. (i did this once and freaked me out, although probably freaked him out more)

This dip will drop everything off from the fish, even stuff you cant even see will fall right off. Like the instant, "suck it" dip for parasites.

Im not using it. lol This skimmer is a serious monster. Yours any time you need it to catch back up
