So I have a biocube 14, about to upgrade to a biocube 29 hqi

right now i dont have a sump...thinking of getting one for the 29 gallon tank...i have seen some posts that hinted about not being able to grow sps in new tanks or nano tanks and even tanks without sumps or fuges but ive never come across the reason...have i made this up or is there a reason not to put sps in a semi new tank with no fuge or sump

The thing with sps is water quality, lighting and flow. If you can create all these aspects in your nano, then there is on reason not to be able to keep sps. I have seen some of the most amazing sps tanks in a 20L. I am in fact right now planning an sps dominant tank for my 22 cad I am currently cycling.

I have sps in my 12g cube but I do weekly water changes. I always make sure my salt level is the same I top off everyday to prevent salinity swings. I have a reef keeper to keep on a strict lighting schedule. I feed my fish with the lowest phosphate releasing food possible (elos) pellets. I have Led lights that way my tank doesn't get over heated from mh lights but still puts out a nice enough par that the sps will grow.

It can be done its just not as easy as in a larger tank. I would also not advise it in a new system that is going to have some chemical swings.

You can take 2 different tanks that have the same coral but slightly different levels of ph alk, mag, etc.etc... but as long as they are within tolerant levels the corals will thrive.

I have seen corals that do great in my tank do terrible in others tanks and vice versa. I think the biggest key is "stability"
