I think nitrates stay because of the three sharks the ray and the zebra eel. That's the reason I am building the bigger sump. Because it will get worse as they grow. My daughters 8 gallon nano is much easier on the maintenance. Lol

With a tank like that my 125 would classify as a nano at your house. Maybe even a Pico. LOL

New sump put in today. Looks like wiring will be finished later and skimmer did not come. But still looks good. It's huge.
