New BioCube 29

I have a royal gramma and I love the little guy (otis) I definitely recommend that fish.

As for dwarf angels, they tend to nip at soft corals so just keep that in mind if you ever get one.

Edit: as for the clown fish, yes, everyone has a pair... but that's because they are awesome. Very very social fish. always in the water column. I have 2 in my 54 and I will be getting 2 more (maybe a different kind) for my 29 biocube

almost bought a royal gramma, but the LFS suggested it not be the first fish added to a tank. at another LFS saw a flame hawk i liked but again told not to have him be first fish. both said not to add a dwarf flame angel as first fish. i was beginning to wonder if there was any species of fish that could be first. not sure what my nest fish will be but i have 3-4 weeks to decide.

Edit: and crew, i will not be adding corals at this time. i know this goes against reef keeping, but i want a fish tank, not a coral tank. after i get some fish, in a few months, i will add a feather duster or coco worm. that is all i plan on for the foreseeable future

well there are plenty of fish only tanks so go for it. Hawk fish are cool but eat invertabrites.. keep that in mind as well

well all six hermits have dies within the last week. the six snails are all doing well. my chalk bass 'creeper' is fine. eating well, i feed once a day between 7 and 8 pm. i have algae on the live rock and now one spot on the sand. tested water saturday. SG 1.022 - ph 8.2 - alk 2.5 meql - nitrite 0 - nitrate .2 - amonia .1. i guess amonia is up beacuse of the new fish(1 week) and the dead hermits. i test every saturday. trying to decide if my hermits starved or what. also need to know with the algae growing when to get more hermits or if i should skip hermits and go with a different type of snail that will clinb the rocks. the snails i have now(naserrius) stay in the sand and only come out to feed.

hermits probably did starve...u should wait to add anything except for snails imo until u have a small bit of maturity...one or 2 hermits may be ok right now but 6 probably starved ...leftover food from one fish isnt much :)..id get some astreas snails...they will clean your rocks and glass...the nasserrius wont..is this going to be a fish only tank..if not u need to get your SG up a bit
..also anytime something dies at this point get it outta there or your ammonia will spike again

Hammcd, thanks for the advice. yes this will be Fish only. i will look at getting more snails for the rock and glass this weekend. i would like a free swimming fish next. the chalk bass tends to hide alot. any recomendation? should i get something like a goby first? i liek the yellow watchman and or diamond. other fish i like the looks of are orangelined cardinal, scarlet hawkfish, pink streaked wrasse.

i have a pajama cardinal and he swims everywhere..also 2 clownfish that r everywhere...sixline wrasses also swim constantly but id wait until last for them because they will pick on whatever you add to the tank after them

my daughter Alyx picked my second fish. Royal Gramma. he is small. maybe 3/4 of an inch. Alyx has not named him yet. photo later after acclimating and the lights come on.

also got 3 bumble bbe and 3 astria snails

could not get the gramma to eat saturday or sunday.

the chalk bass has be acting weird. he has been hiding under the rock. only comes out for a few seconds and bobs up and down in the water a couple of inches then goes back into hiding. never seen him do that before. did not want to eat like normal.

dont know what is going on. the 2 fish have not interacted that i have seen or even been near eachother. is it normal for a fish to be that upset when a tank mate is introduced?

Did you see him eat at the LFS? Also start Qt.
Ive seen the effects of not QT or seeing a fish eat. Lost some great fish

last night when i got home, the Chalk Bass, creeper, had moved to a new hiding place. when i fed the frozen food, watched both fish eat some. creeper is still hiding in the rocks but i feel much better since he moved and ate. will try the pellets again tonight.

Did you get any garlic to lace the food with? That was suggested to me and the fish ate some right away. Still do some periodically as well.

Stang,
nope, no garlic, just scoop some tank water into a shot glass, drop the cube of food in, wait 5 or so minutes for the food to melt, then dump in the tank. i guess i habe pretty good flow with the split return because the frozen food stays suspended in the water for over 2 minutes. of course when i do pellets the sink immediately.

what type of garlic? i have chopped garlic in a jar from publix. do you just put some in the shot glass with the frozen cube and the tank water?

im not sure id put regular garlic in it but stuff like "Garlic Rx" is nice to soak your food in before feedings...helps with their immune system and entices them to eat...ive seen it for sale at petco and other sponsors...lots of food out there contains garlic already too but it is "baked" in and doesnt have the juicy properties that garlic rx does

i want the fish to eat pellets like creeper did when i got him. i am hoping to only use frozen food as a treat once in a while. right now, my budget does not allow for me to buy frozen very often. i know that makes me a bad person but there are upgrades i want to get and other fish so i need to save if i can and not do frozen.

soak the pellets in garlic rx

Edit: i have frozen pellets and flakes...fish seem to like the pellets best so thats what they get most often..plus i like it because the pellets dont dissipate and go all over the tank like frozen does

Edit: that was suppose to be frozen food, pellets, and flakes

I used the seachem garlic product. It enticed my smaller clown to eat the first time. Or at least it didn't eat until I did that. All the fish seem to love pellets though the benny has a hard time eating them. All but the small clown like flake as well though the small clown will eat it. I've done frozen once when I had just the clowns and it they didn't take to it too much. I'll try again soon but pellets and a little flake seem to be the staples for my fish.

well, creeper Chalk Bass) and tray(RG) are still swimming. creeper hides almost constantly and i only see him eat everyother day. tray stays in the rock and nips at the mysis. cant get him to eat the pellets. he will stab at them but once they hit the sand, he will not pick them off the sand like creeper does.

on a side note, in the middle chamber i have 2 bags, one with purigen and carbon, one with phosguard. how often should i empty the bags and refill? i was thinking once a month but do not know.
