My tank has reached a new low and I'm ready to step in to try and fix it but need some help on where to start.

First back story.
Tank was doing really well up until April when, school and life got busy and tank went to the back burner, then I just didn't want to deal with it over summer.

Water checks out fine just the basics; pH, nitrate, nitrite, calcium, alkalinity, temp 77.5 which most stable it's been since I put on a temp controlled fan.

The biggest most frustrating issue has been my acan, they look really good when my lights are on tentacles out and puffed up. At night the total opposite the tissue has pulled off and skeleton has been slowly shrinking. And now a brown algae is slowly smothering some of them!

First thought nipping, but they are in my sump with no fish so that's out.

Pests- I don't know of anything that just feeds on acan/LPS and haven't seen anything on corals.

Lighting- it's 2 24 watt t5 bulbs and been like this for almost 3 years. 1 bulb is 7ish months don't know the other. But would that cause issues at night?

Feeding- I target them about once a week with homemade food that I feed to the whole tank.

Other issue lack of anything on acros. They just seem to be taking up space no real color and minimal polyp extension.

The only thing that has shown real growth are a couple of mangroves the were added in March.

Thoughts?? Could really uses some help so I don't loose anything else.

I would look at the PO4 as well....althought you would have noticed your acro's respond much faster than the acans. How is your Mag?

sounds like phosphates and maybe nitrates too high.

also, do you have peppermint shrimp?

Been a while since I checked PO4 accurately.

Might need to track down a photometer or a Hanna checker.

Mag was 1200 although it think it was with API kit.

And ralph I have peppermint shrimp in my display but not the sump.

I don't think API makes a mag kit, unless it was recently released.

I have a photometer, if you plan on coming to the meeting, I can bring it with and test your water there.

I agree with the others but it could also be the lighting. If your bulbs are too old, the Acan isn't getting enough "food" during the light hours and looks worse at night.

Seth The Wine Guy;795421 wrote: Mangroves are used for PO4 uptake right? If they're the only thing doing well...

I thought they were nitrate/nitrite exporters no?? Also i feel like green hair algae would be a bigger issue if PO4 was a problem cause there has been no major outbreak.

Although bubble algae has spread more then I would like... who on the west side has a photometer.

Dylan thanks for the offer but I would be able to make the meeting this month.

If you can wait, I'll be out that way in a week. If you want to meet up some where, I'm willing to work with you.

I know you said that your water was fine but how often do you change your water. There are things added in this process as well as taken out. I would only consider the mangroves as a nice feature. I would not really depend on them to aid in filtration. I think Seth was pointing it out to show that they were doing well because they have a good food source, meaning the nitrates and PO4 in your tank. I'd really start with a big fat water change. Like 40% +. It cannot hurt and you may see a difference. I do water changes weekly and love the way my corals look after it.

Colin I know you probably know the difference but are you sure it is algae and not brown jelly? When an Acan or any LPS gets damaged, stung, etc., it will get brown jelly on it and it will die quickly if not fragged off. Just a thought...

Good luck!

Edit: And just my luck. I was hoping to buy back a frag of a couple of the acans that you got from me if they are still around... :(
