I've always wanted to set one up, and now I'm getting close.

I'm going to be setting up a 40gb reef! So far my equipment list is as follows:

1 tank...duh

vertex in80 skimmer

ATI Sunpower 6xt5 (booya)
Will be making light bar from 1" conduit to go up and over the tank

Fabricating a c2c overflow w 2 3/4" returns (will be drilling this weekend!)
(should I T them into one main return or run 2 different lines or should it matter?)
I guess If I T them together I will need 2x 3/4" ends and a 1.5" end

Return Pump Mag 7

Now.. I need a stand and some circulation. I'm leaning toward a small Tunze.. that coupled w the return should be adequate for a tank this size.

Also looking for a used Osmolator.

What else?

Any advice? anyone done a 40gb like this?

I think a mag 7 unrestricted might be a little much unless you regulate it or have a manifold coming off it. Sounds like you are off to a good start! Good luck!

Meh.. I'm gonna run it :) I'll put a regulator on it just to be safe.

The only REAL concern I have is that it may run the water through the sump so fast that the water doesn't have enough contact with media and such.. HOWEVER if I'm running reactors that shouldn't be an issue.. once the water is IN.. its IN till its OUT :)

I even thought about putting one of those isolating heads on it to spread the flow around.

Thats why I think it might be a little much. Are you talking about a SCWD? If so, I looked into them and most bashed the 3/4" one. Im not sure if the 1" will be adequate for your application bc of its size. Might want to dig around here and RC for an answer on that. But the mag 7 would be about the right siz1e for the 3/4" one.

I have 3 of the 3/4" SCWD's on different tanks, a 29g, 30g and a 40g. I run these return pumps-mag 5, 2 quiet one 4000 and I still have at least 2 power heads in each tank. I found with the stronger pump it worked better to have two nozzles on each side with 4" to 6" of lock line. :)
