octopus in a reef tank?

no poly is a very thick filter designed to remove toxins.
the octo might only be a small part of the issue here.
a WC is advised asap. the WC is always a good 1st step with issues like this. its still pretty unclear if the octo puts out a toxin when it dies. ive heard it both ways. still i wouldnt take my chances.
i had a seahare die and it inked like crazy as soon as i touched it to remove it. do a WC, run some poly and carbon asap until a solution presents itself or you know whats going on. none of these things i mentioned will do any harm to the tank or its livestock.
only positive things can come from it.
bottom line, when i have a issue i do a water test, usually save extra water for later tests, WC, renew my carbon, and call jenn lol.
ok i usually call jenn first but i know her RX requirements ahead of time lol.

LOL Rick! I'm kinda like you. When I have a problem I call Allen from Atlanta Reef. But yes I just finished my WC and I added new carbon to my tank as well. now I have my dieing coral soaking in the medicoral and I'll remove them in a little bit. I'll keep you guys posted tomorrow if I see an improvement in their health. If my brain doesn't lose anymore skin than I know it worked.

Also I just removed the PVC trap I set for the octopus but there was nothing in it

good luck Hnguyen! Sounds like you did everything one could do & hopefully things will be better in the morning.

I have a wishlist pinned up next to my tank so, if anyone puts something in there, it better be on the list.

Think of it less asatrap than something to keep the octopus intrigued and well fed. he might not eat your livestock if he's well fed. Consider sharks and fish at the aquarium.

he will outsmart you every time.

Hoang - not a bad idea to have a bottle of http://www.seachem.com/Products/product_pages/Prime.html">Prime </a> laying around - at least to detoxify any ammonia, nitrates, and nitrates should this problem occurr.

I would also step up your water changes while you still have the stowaway..If you are doing changes every 2 weeks now then I would go to weekly

1+ thats a great idea!

I run an Eco Aqualizer in my system so that really helps keep all the nitrates and nitrites down low if not zero. I also run an oversize skimmer as well. I've never tried prime myself but my LFS told me that its no good so I never have it a second thought.

After I did my WC things seem to be doing better. I also did the medicoral dip as well for those coral that were dieing and it seems to have worked and stop it from spreading further to its death. Everything seems fine now.

As far as the octopus goes. Still no sign of it. I've been searching for it every night with no luck. I even tried silver side on a string but no luck. So I think I'll just leave it be for the time being. Now if I start to see missing fish than It's time to remove all my rocks and catch that sucker!!

That's what I am talking about. Fish Wish list. EVERYONE should have one. Its the only way customers can get fish from me. I love not having the ability for impulse fish purchases in my store. Now corals, that's a different story!

Let me know what your next fish on your list is please.

Eco Aqualizer for those of you that don't know what it is. It's one of these babies. http://www.saltcorner.com/Reviews/showreview.php?reviewID=19">http://www.saltcorner.com/Reviews/showreview.php?reviewID=19</a>

It seems to work pretty well IMO. My nitrite has always been zero ever since I've had my return pump pass through the Eco Aqualizer before it re-enters the display tank. Although I do see a little nitrate in my test water but the levels are little to sometimes none. The same goes for ammonia as well.

The only thing that bugs me is that I don't know why my coral just started to die. At least the good thing is its only 3 of them. The rest of my coral seem to still be doing great. I guess its just one of those times where coral just feel like dieing so they just die?

you had mentioned you had a little ammonia before so I kinda think that would be the culprit of the coral die off - some corals have zero tolerance for even trace amounts of ammonia. Prime, for some hobbyists - is a staple item - even if seldomly used can save you from having to wait 24 hrs+ for water for a water change imho..I have a bottle but rarely use it

I never have a problem with getting water for a WC. The RO/DI unit I have can filter 200 GPD. With a 120g tank I only need about 20g of water, which should only take about half an hour or so. Than after that its all up to how fast my heater can warm up the water to match my display tank. I think I will look more into the Prime and see the pros and cons of it and decide if its suitable for my system.
