Here is a link to the skimmer that I bought yesterday. Bought it used with no manual from Jgoal55 who got it from someone else on here.

Please take a look and the answer the following question:

http://www.aquacave.com/detail.aspx?ID=499">http://www.aquacave.com/detail.aspx?ID=499</a>

Chrisjet came by to show me how to plumb this thing. Thanks Chris! you left your test kit here btw! Rep point for Chris.

He raised an interesting question...all skimmers seem to have a knob that controls flow so you don't over run the cup. This one does not. He suggested a valve plumbed into the return line to control the flow which makes sense to me.

Will that be ok? Can someone post some clear pics of a skimmer that is similar please.

Thanks all,

without the gate valve mod, the pipe sticking straight up (where the water comes out) should be height adjustable... moving it up/down controls the water level inside the skimmer.

uh what? height adjustable in what way?

Its a soild piece of pipe that is glued into the skimmer body only way its adjustable is with a sawzall or I could attached PVC.

I'm lost

then its missing a piece... it should be able to be moved up and down. If you look at the picture in your link you can see a second tube inside that can be pulled up

either way... I would HIGHLY reccomend doing a gate valve mod to the skimmer. It will make your life MUCH easier :)

Ok checking to see if the mystery piece is there.

Valve would need to be on the intake side?

no

Mystery piece is there and extended to just below the cup.

Now I get it water level is dictated by the height of the outlet tube since the water cannot go any higher than the out hole.

I already knew all this I was just testing yall.

Yall pass.

No... on the output tube. The idea is to create a higher pressure inside the skimmer to raise the water level. A valve on the intake would just lower the pressure.

Check out
a> for an overview of how to setup a gate valve mod (your skimmer is essentially the same as an ASM).

Ok valve on the outflow side.

I'm all over this thing!

Looking at my hardwoods one more time before the impending flood.

Wanted to bump this thread back up and make sure you put this in your sump. This style skimmer is not supposed to be "plumbed"... it should just be sitting in your sump.

Hardwoods will be safe then... just got me worried for a minute when I read "plumbed" and hardwords.

If you are concerned with splash (as I was on my Euroreef which has a nearly identical design), you can slide a piece of 3" PVC over the output pipe. Smaller than 3" and it may restrict water flow and affect your skim levels inside the skimmer. Any larger and it can tip the skimmer over.

Of course one of the gate valve mods mentioned would solve this problem, too.
