What is your opinion on tanks with hang on back filters to help save money to buy more coral instead of purchasing a tank a sump and not being able to buy as much coral in the long run?

When you say hang on back filter, are you talking about one of these? I would never put one of these on a reef tank for several reasons. Also, what size tank are we talking?

HOBs, canister, and sumps are all the exact same thing - places to stick stuff, move water around it, and add water volume.

You'll need to supplement water movement anyway so just use whatever.

HOB max extra water/storage is about 1g (aquaclear 110), canisters get bigger (3g for a bigish one?), sumps go as big as you want.

Depends on your tank volume? If your able to keep it super stable , you probably don’t need a high fancy filtration system , many many people have kept successful reef aquariums with minimal filtration mostly softies and LPS

People who keep successful, simple, set ups
hardly post , mostly the people with the fancy set ups post
