I might be purchasing a non-drilled 40 gal cube. What are my options for getting this thing reef ready? Can I add a corner overflow kit and drill the bottom of the tank using a Durso type overflow kit or should I go with an overflow kit?

Most tanks are tempered on the bottom, so drilling the bottom is not an option.

glass is thick on the back of marine land tanks. i drilled a 27 cube with no problems.

I have a nice cube with the sides drilled, so that's always an option. I have the last right angle of the durso an the air valve in the tank and then the rest is on the other side of the glass. It's the same principle though.

This will be a new venture for me. My 90 came predrilled with the overflow kit so it was straight forward and all I had to do was ready the directions (ok....the wife read the directions). This will require a little more research on the plumbing setup but I'm sure I can figure it out. Just want to decide on the best option for drilling placement.

On my 28 cube the drain is 6" from the top and the return above that. Make sure you leave enough room between the holes for BOTH bulkheads. You could drill lower and run a pipe up to the drain level too though, but why make it complex?

If it were me and the tank was not pre-drilled, I would drill if for a Bean Animal. You won't regret it. Promise.

That would be the next bit of research. I know I've seen posts on here before regarding them so that will be some reading for this afternoon as I wait for the Falcons game tonight.
