Alright negative nancy
Less than 6 months no repairs I'll give you a frag. Over 12 months you give me a frag

lol you're on son!

seriously. hope it works out :)

Finally finished building the water change station and picked up a couple barrels. Top barrel will be fed by RO/DI and bottom barrel will be for water changes. I plan on putting bulkheads through the bottom of each barrel and utilizing gravity for most everything to minimize maintenance and equipment. i'll drop a good powerhead in the bottom one for water changes to stir salt. I also plan on installing a clear vertical telltale tube to see the water level in the barrels without having to open them or look in them.

Do you think those horizontal supports will bow over time?

You're in this for the long haul. I would hate to see you have to rip it apart (plumbing included) to fix it later.

even if he got water on it. imho it would last years. might not be a bad idea to paint over them but it looks solid.

could even do a polyeurathane coat

The whole thing is made out of 2x6's which I believe are rated structurally to support 400 pounds each. I'll also be bolting 3 of the risers to studs on the wall. Plus I don't expect to have both barrels full but quite rarely. Once I dump the top barrel into the bottom for a water change it'll take a while to refill the top one. I'll keep an eye on it once waters in and cross brace if I see any weirdness. Probably paint once I get in a lull. Gonna start on framing out the room this weekend or sooner.

400 pounds when oriented the way you have it: laying flat? Wood gets its structural strength from its vertical thickness. Those horizontal 2 x 6s would be far stronger if they were oriented perpendicular to their current position: thus utilizing the 5.5" of vertical thickness rather than the 1.5" to support the weight.

I am not saying there will be a problem because I am not a home builder, engineer, etc. I do, however, build furniture as a hobby and have a better than average understanding of lumber.

Things that are in your favor with this design: the horizontal pieces are short and the weight is skewed to the front/back which appears to have adequate support.

Good luck!

Looking good a Rusty! Your motivating me to build another rack and add another barrel to my RO system. Geeze thanks man! Ugh lol

What he said!

In addition, with the offset between barrels, transferring water from top to bottom will put some lateral force on the entire set up. While it may be minimal, over time it will continually put side to side pressure changes.

I see what you guys are saying about the horizontal pieces. And I wasn't sure how to calculate what's required there either.I would have turned them vertically but I need the clearance for access and piping. once it was built I stood on each of the rails and jumped up and down and could not hear any noises nor did I notice any deflection. I weigh 200 pounds so figured it would be okay. I could add a temporary riser in the middle between both sections that I could remove if I needed to take the middle barrel out. Do you think I should put that in?
i'll definitely be looking to lean on everyone's knowledge when I start building the stand for this Monster :-)

I think a removable center brace would be wise. $5 in materials and a couple minutes may save you heart ache down the road.

Keep up the good work!

Point of no return baby!! Tank is on order and 60% deposit made!
Plan on beefing up your reefing arms so you can help me get this bad boy into my basement in about 6 weeks ;). It will come fully crated in an enclosure so should travel well and be reasonable to move. Also they are shipping it on it's face so we can roll it right through the door on the pallet it comes on.
ordered at 118 x 56 x 33 but the manufacturer told me that the sheets usually come in a few inches over what's ordered and that he'd expand the 56 or 33 dimension if possible at no extra charge to use up the sheet. To be confirmed once materials are in. They are being ordered monday.
Also, the acrylic is over an inch thick and can stop a 40 caliber bullet so luckily, i won't have to buy kevlar vests for the fish in case my neighborhood goes wwwwaaaaayyyy down hill in the next 20 years.

Also, has a 30 year warranty against yellowing

Fish room framing and saw! Time to start framing it up tomorrow! Going with 2x6 walls for better sound proofing and more space to run utilities.
Hauled 500 pounds of wood down to my basement.

Zomg! Framing finished for the new fish room! That was a lot of work.

Next I have to figure out hvac, electrical, and plumbing. Hvac I think I'll run a duct from the 1st floor unit but I may use it as a transfer duct with a fan. Kinda depends on the space load so I'll probably wait to do the final tie in. Gotta work up an electrical plan, not totally sure where I want the equipment / outlets yet.

i was wondering what happened to all that wood and supplies you purchased. Had a feeling you were getting to work on it.

Looking real good.
