Outdrsyguy's 940 gallon DT Build

Marine design inc. They were $3000 less expensive but mostly because my reef creations would not warranty the tank unless I bought the stand from them which was another 3000. At this point though, I'm starting to regret not spending the extra $4000, I would have had my tank and stand for probably 18 weeks now and also would have had a lot more room underneath the stand then the wooden beast I built.

Hi,

This isnt accurate though. You did inquire as to the inquiry, and I provided the exact MRC warranty info in this link:
http://www.myreefcreations.com/MRC%20Aquarium%20Warranty.pdf">http://www.myreefcreations.com/MRC%20Aquarium%20Warranty.pdf</a>

Their warranty is simply LONGER if you use a stand provided by them, as you can see in the document.

How complicated is the tank design?
Has it been started yet?
What's their excuse for it not being ready?
And one day at band camp!

Supposedly they've started polishing the edges (no proof with pics yet). The tank is extremely basic, it's just a 118 x 56 x 33 box with a near coast to coast rear overflow. I don't think it even comes with holes drilled or bulk heads. It's just big. The claim is manufacturing problems and a deal gone bad that put them way behind (original timeline was 6-8 weeks). The guy was very responsive before the order but now i get a response about once every 2 weeks. I've threatened lawsuits, contacted the local police (they can't help), and contacted the indiana better business bureau about how to proceed with a complaint and at this point i'm at my wits end. I'm not sure if i'm on my 3rd or 4th promised ship date currently but the others have all come and gone without proof of any work done.
My fatal flaw (one of the stupidest things i've ever done in hindsight) was to paypal as a "gift" and not with the 3% additional cost for backing by paypal. I pretty much kick myself every night for that. I'm just way to trusting in people doing what they say and it's really biting me here. $200 and i could have just yanked the money back months ago... Words honestly fall short of describing my inner turmoil over that mistake... I have so many emails, texts, and phone calls i'm certain I could win in court, but actually getting your money back from someone who doesn't want to pay (even with a court judgment) seems to be nearly impossible without spending that same amount in lawyer fees.

Sorry Jeremy, I didn't mean to misquote it's just that in my mind as a consumer, a warranty of 90 days is pretty lame. We live in a world with standard 365 day warranties with additional years being offered at minimal cost on most everything you buy. My preference was to go local and the tank prices were so close I would have bought MRC if they had provided a standard warranty of 1 year or more with my ridiculously overbuilt stand.

Hey man, no worries. I just didnt want anyone to think that MRC didnt warranty their aquariums. They absolutely do. A couple of quick points on that- aquariums arent like stereos or tvs. They are absolutely critically reliant on their stand. The best built aquarium in the world wont stand up without a proper support. This is the rationale behind that issue. Id speculate that the VAST majority of tank failure are due to improper stands, or them not being true or level, etc. Offering a long term warranty on an item that can fail TOTALLY OUTSIDE the scope of manufacture isnt good business. Id be skeptical of an aquarium manufacturer that did. Especially one asking money be sent without any consequence to them if they do not deliver. But, thats just my opinion.

Secondly, I wish you'd have told me this was your concern when we were discussing it. MRC has made exceptions and extended warranties provided adequate drawings, engineering, and plans an be provided to show the tank is properly supported. We recently installed a 180 gallon under this exact premise. It was an option.

Regardless, water under the bridge. Im hoping it works out for you, and you get this beast rolling.

Wow, paypal as a gift? When spending this kind of money I wouldn't do anything other than a credit card. The guy knows it will very hard for you to get your money back. When you paypal with a credit card you not only get procetion from PP but your card company as well.

Did you research the company at all? I can't find very much on them on the net. Nowadays that's another red flag. There's also a complaint very similar to yours on BBB's site.

I would file a case yourself in the court that is in his jurisdiction. You can do this yourself without an attorney. In Indiana you can file a small claims court is the value is $6000 or less.
http://www.in.gov/judiciary/files/small-claims-manual.pdf">http://www.in.gov/judiciary/files/small-claims-manual.pdf</a>
Hopefully it's less than that and you can include your travel costs in the claim.
If it's more than $6K then I would start looking up attorney's in that jurisdiction.

I'm sorry you're having to go though this. But the more time that goes by the harder it will be to get your money. You will also want to get a judgement before he files for bankruptcy. Based on the other report like yours I've got a feeling they wont be around much longer.

I wish you the best of luck getting a satisfactory resolution.

I think I'm getting closer to having the Aquascaping I'm looking for. There's 3 bridges that go front to back and a jagged back wall. There's a nice clear chasm running diagonal front to back and a couple really tall pillars. If you look from the left side of the tank you can also see all the way across the tank under all the bridges and it looks like a 10' tunnel which is a really cool view.
There's a 1' deep cave inside the mound in the front also.

While I continue to fight my battle to get a tank I've been playing with how to actually assemble the Aquascaping once the time arrives. The Marco cement works "ok" but doesn't always hold the pieces together well. Also working with some fiberglass rod and reef epoxy. Each kind of seems to have its own niche.
Started making homes for my future fish! I'm taking the reef saver rock and drilling out holes and caves. The fish are totally gonna dig it. Risk is about 1 in 5 rocks split in 2 when the rotary hammer drill pegs a stress point. Here's a before and after example.

All those were the standard solid boulders.
Ah well. Back to the rock destroying! Hoping to gate a tank shipped in the next couple weeks.

Well tank is finally under construction. Here's a couple pics. I might actually have to start prepping this project to moving forward again!

I saw this thread pop up and I clicked to hopefully see that it had been delivered. Guess not, but at least there is progress!

Congrats! I'm sure you are getting excited again.

yea.... they don't really bother with things like delivery dates....
i'm going to guess around end of next month, maybe middle of following month. I'm hoping they won't let it sit half built too crazy long... but who knows!
