Overflow algae, will covers make it go away?

I have a little bit of hair algae, a lil bubble, and other junk accumilating in my overflows. Not out of control but will be that way if I dont do something soon. By using the black clipboards and removing the light source 100% from the overflows will the algae consume itself and effectively "dissapear" or do I have to do some manual removal before hand?

leave it. I would get rid of bubble algae anywhere though.

Remove what you can of course just to manually remove nutrients from potential die off. Blackout method after that

Gary, unless you have that green kryptonite algae, lack of light will kill it.

Injecting valonia/bubble algae with hydrogen peroxide/vinegar/kalk paste or Dave's lye paste will usually kill them. I just pick them off, usually. The novelty of chemically frying them wears off pretty quickly-IME.

I would cover them first, wait a few weeks, then check. If the algae in there hasn't disintegrated by then, clean them.
