Potassium permangenate

What's the concentration you're using? Are you using the granules that you would get at an "outdoors" store that are used for water sterilization/fire starting, or is there another form?

Yes, I'm using the granules. The product I am using is called Oxy Clean made for ponds.

I am using about 1.5grams per 3 gallons and only dipping for a minute.

I shake the coral in the solution and then move it to clean tank water, let it sit for a few mins, and then back to the DT.

Dang Monti Nudis! Fought em a few months ago and won! Used a combo of Lugol's at like 4x label strength mixed with Coral Rx at 4x label strength for 10 minutes. No harm to corals noted but those little buggers and stuff I never knew existed jumped off real fast.

One person that I really respect as a reefer and handles large volumes of corals uses Bayer Advanced insect killer as a dip for hard corals and swears by it. I've never used or met anyone using the permanganate but have heard it is strong stuff.

No monti eating nudis here.... Or any montis! Lol.

I have plenty of other fun pests. I'm hoping it does something for algae, particuarly bubble algae. We'll see. Plus, I love trying new things. Sometimes they don't work. Sometimes they do.

As far as the Bayer, I've heard of that too. I'll get around to trying that too.

The reason I tried PP: I saw a guy use it on a freshwater tank. The total water volume was about 17 gallons. He put a half teaspoon(2.5 grams) in the tank to treat ick. He tried this in 4 different tanks. Within two hours, the fish were all turning belly up. We ran around adding prime to the tanks. The prime IMEDIATELY neutralized the PP and the remaining fish seemed pretty pissed. They were all still covered in ick. The next day, the survivors looked like they had been through a beating, but no ick. By the 3rd day, all the survivors looked perfect!

A week later I tried doing the reccomended dose: 1.7grams and it worked great with no fatalities.

I later talked to a guy that has been working on koi farms and in koi shows and picked his brain about it. I learned a lot, and have been playing with it since.

I like!

I am an advocate of experimentation to find new uses for stuff too. I still love the story that my grandpa told me about WWII. Europe was cold in the winter and bullets didnt play nice with their gas tanks and radiators in their jeeps. They got tootsie rolls with their rations and used them to plug holes till they could get repaired. He jokingly said they tasted terrible afterwards though.

I am eager to hear about how you fare especially with the bubble algae. I hate the stuff and have lazy emerald crabs. I am predicting that the permanganate will work better than a tootsie roll lol :)

Just an update:

I ordered 200g of pure potassium permanganate. The tests carry on. With the pure stuff, I am only using a 1/10th of a chemiclean scoop.

I'll be ordering a scale that can measure down to 0.001grams and ill have an exact dose reccomendation for coral dips.
