Protein skimmer help

Well even then, it should still work right. If you know anyone that could pick it up for you at the meeting, I can do that too. I just leave it all the way open on my setup, now, kinda useless. Again, that's IF I can find some hose the right size.

Hmm, well that shouldn't be an issue...I'm at a loss, maybe a call to Coralife is in order?

The drain hose should be 2 inches under the water l.ine for it to work effectively. If it is not, it will not work correctly.

I might be able to come to the meeting the drive is what is going to be the determination since next week is spring break do you think it would it be alright until next week till i get that sump or if when i get the sump i would need the valve and could just leave open all the way

I found when my drain was too low, the air couldn't exit through the tiny vent hole fast enough and it caused lots of large bubbles, gurgling, and an unsteady water level in the skimmer. Mine actually exits just above the water line, it's a bit loud, but I run my skimmer on a timer anyways, 12am-7am it's off so I can sleep.

Is it working now? I was under the impression it still wasn't. Heck, I could probably mail it if you can't come, very small piece.

Lemme check tonight on the hose and get back to you. This would probably be the EASIEST solution to the issue.

The only other thing I can think of is the impeller shaft is broken. They are not plastic so they break easily.

I guess it is working because still no water is over flowing into the cup

If the impeller shaft were broken I'd wonder how water was getting pumped through the thing, lol. So, now just noise. Is it gurgling from a vortex in front of the pump, or from the airline, or from the output?

Are you using the silencer? I found adding 1" extensions to the silencer and the output vent helped a bit. Keep in mind, this thing is not "silent" and it's one of the downfalls that allow it to be a bit cheaper than some other skimmers. I usually go to sleep with the TV on, but this skimmer would keep me up...

I slid the unit it self about 2 cm down so it would be in the water and man we're in business no noise it works and its already a milky green in the cup not overflowing just at a slow steady pace thanks

Mine was actually broken in two but still pumped...just not efficient. I didn't know til I disassembled the darned thing!! :)

How about lines being pinched, etc?

No problem, glad it's working. These things are decent skimmers when set up correctly and maintained. The biggest thing is to keep the water level constant. Make sure if you go to a sump setup, that you do have a "skimmer section" that maintains constant water level at all times. That will make this thing all but bulletproof. Occasionally it'll goof up and overflow, but that usually only happens when the air hose is clogged with salt or something.

yeah I will have to keep that in mind if I start having problems again thanks for the advice and suggestions

hey one more thing what size sump do you use on your 90 gallon I like looking at our setup it is nice

Thanks. I'm usin a Mag 9.5 for return but wouldn't mind going a bit bigger to feed more accessories. Right now it's feeding a fuge and CA reactor. I'd like it to feed that stuff, the skimmer, and the remote DSB to eliminate 2 more pumps from the sump.

yeah my tank comes in next week it was suppose to be last week on Wednesday but yeah I'll have pictures and all up on the build

you gave some pretty good advice on the SS65. I was wondering if after owning it for a while, would you consider a new one? I purchased the same one but i haven't put it to use yet, I've been getting conflicting opinions on it

I guess it depends on how you expect it to perform. I knew it was a "value" skimmer, and it fit my budget at the time. I ran a SS125 on my 75, and it did okay for a light bioload. When I upgraded and increased system volume and load, it wasn't able to keep up to my expectations, so I needed to upgrade it as well. I figure these skimmers are rated for a tank 30-40% smaller than the name implies with a medium bioload.

The one I'm running on my Aquapod (a SS65 that came with the tank) works fine since I created a chamber to keep the water level constant. That is the #1 thing about this skimmer, it's very finicky with water level changes. Raise the level just a little bit and it'll overflow.

Is it going to be the same as the $300 hob cone skimmer? No. Are they worth the price? IMO, yes. I got the first one as I was getting my feet wet getting into the hobby. As a college student, I couldn't just plunk down a few hundred dollars for the top of the line, so I searched and found this model that, and as long as it's set up right and maintained, works fine.

Yeah i would purchase one again but i didnt understand if you were asking me or au01st
