I wanted to post this pic of a very interesting acropora colony I bought from PureReef a week or two ago. This is a maricultured colony. Skin is yellow with growth ends being bluish-purplish, with yellow polyps. Looks like one of those "LE" corals you'd pay $100+ for a measly 1" frag. Got the whole colony for less than that.

You should have been at the frag swap Dave! We gave away two whole colonies of it and lots of frags. Pure Reef and ARC got all our colonies from the same source that week. I named it "Milkyway" Acro. I love it!

There are lots and lots of really nice acros like that one coming in, both maricultured and wild. The Aussie stuff in particular can be quite stunning, and can rival the color of most LE Aquacultured pieces straight out of the ocean. I can't imagine there has ever been a better time than now to collect nice acropora specimen. I think shipping practices have a lot to do with it, as better techniques have led to higher % of SPS making the long ride to the states, and holding their color better. Gone are the days when you could only get mostly browned out acros at the LFS.

The only downside I find with wild/maricultured acros is that they tend to change colors quite rapidly under captive lighting. Some end up looking better, others just turn green. Either way, gorgeous piece!

I saw that one at Pure Reef and started to get it but decided to wait. It is a very unique piece. I may go back and get one as they had several. Congratulations Dave, you got a good one.

Seems happy right now. Tank is lit by 6x Radion Units.

I have had some family things going on that have kept me off the boards and away from the ARC itself this first quarter of 2012. I had a parent move in with my family in December, and have had a lot of things to take are of for her, which has eaten up most of my free time the last 2-3 months so far. I'm hoping things smooth out for me after March is over. Best I could do for my tanks was water changes in that time.

This definitely was a nice one for the Frag Swap. I hope mine does well.

Thanks a lot Joe.....I've had good luck lately with Maricultured pieces. In the past they sometimes go up in smoke overnight.

That is good to know from someone now in the trade. Thanks Ryan. I have had acros that change for the better and for the worse, just like you said. Like a yellow one that turns green, etc., or are a nice blue and promptly turn brown in the tank! Also have had some that went from one cool color to another cool color, like an even swap!

I have bought acros that don't look great in the LFS tank, but because I see a glint of a nice color in them, there is the possibility of something nice coming out. The gamble is part of the fun. Sometimes you win and sometimes not.

No problem Ralph.

And things are starting to lighten up for me some. It is a big adjustment for my Mom living with three other people after being in her own 4 bedroom house for 20 years, as well as us getting used to her. A few bumps here and there, but nothing we don't/can't work through.
